Why are the morning peak trains not running? Surely they can just pick up where they left off on the pre strike day?
Signallers on a night shift won't have booked on. Trains will only be able to start leaving depots when the morning shift starts. Depot drivers are also mostly in RMT so won't have booked on for night shifts either.

Thanks. I knew there would be a reason.

Why are the morning peak trains not running on Wednesday and Friday? Surely they can just pick up where they left off on the pre strike day?
The railway will be shut between 18:30 on each strike day until (broadly speaking) 07:30 the following morning, due to signallers on early shifts not having booked on.

The strikes on the Thursday and Saturday were deliberately retimed to apply to 02:00-01:59 book ons to maximise this disruption (vs 00:00-23:59 as it originally was, and will be for Tuesday).

How are the routes that run on strike days decided? Is it the routes that would maximise revenue or those just those that those drivers who are working have route knowledge of?

It just strikes (pun intended) me as odd that there's 5 different routes into/out of Leeds operating but just 2 into/out of Manchester.

Ilkley, Skipton and Bradford is effectively a triangle. All interworked, not a great deal of distance between them and always very busy.

I suspect Sheffield and York are the next busiest services. The limiting factor here, unusually, isn't route knowledge but signaller availability.

The Manchester routes are one through service, which has the added factor of ensuring Manchester Airport is still served.

Whichever routes use the fewest signal boxes I imagine.

Network Rail will inform the operators where they have a route. They can then try to plan a service around that. Northern are running pretty much everywhere from Manchester where they have a route. They could probably extend the Alderley Edge service to Crewe if they had sufficient crews, and they could run between Manchester and Preston also. But that's essentially it.

Drivers are not on strike so their route knowledge is irrelevant.

And pretty much all under Leeds North West signaller (except Armley Jn to Leeds).

They could certainly run a slightly more comprehensive service based on the signal boxes that are open. But not a huge degree more. They are probably constrained on the availability of contingency guards.

On strike days Avanti run services from Manchester to London operating via (but not calling at) East Didsbury and Wilmslow, so that gives an idea of one available route. TfW Rail could also run Manchester-Wilmslow-Crewe (skipping Stockport) if they had resources to do so.

The Drax freight trains, that are classed as essential, run via Chat Moss on strike days. Usually they run via Northwich, presumably due to pathing constraints on Chat Moss. That presumably means Chat Moss is open for some passenger services but not a full service.

I find it difficult to believe that Northern cannot resource even 2 non-union or managerial-grade guards to work a Bolton - Oxford Road shuttle for 10 or so hours. The route is open as TPE use it.
The routes Northern are operating on 18/20 August don't seem to be affected by the addition of TSSA strikes, compared to previous RMT-only strikes.

The Drax freight trains run via Chat Moss, Piccadilly and Guide Bridge on strike days using paths that wouldn't otherwise be available were it not for the strikes. They can't go loaded via Victoria because of Miles Platting bank (banking is longer allowed).

Let’s hope they’ve managed to resource the Eccles and Glazebury boxes which nonsensically remained after the electrification of the Chat Moss Route.
