Ive emailed London Midland about this but perhaps someone here can explain :

Want to travel from Manchester to Worcester return next weekend.

There are advance tickets in both directions (£7.50 and £13.50) from Manchester to Kidderminster, but when entering Worcester, about 12 miles further on the same line with the same operator, they dissappear and the only option is an off-peak return about £40.

Ive bought the advances and will pay £5 singles both ways to Worcester, which is a total cost of approx £30, a tenner cheaper than the only advertised fare to Worcester.

My question is why arent the advance tickets available to Worcester for a few pounds more than the Kidderminster prices?

People who wouldnt think to look for advance tickets to Kidderminster then buy two singles are paying £10 more than they need to.

There are no Advance tickets Manchester-Worcester. There are Advances priced by VWC and XC to Kidderminster with '& connections' routing. London Midland may not have an agreement with Virgin and XC to connect Advance tickets to Worcester.

Unfourtunately Advance fares are not available for all routes and no operator is obliged to offer them.

Don't think London Midland will be able to help, probably best contacting XC.

I don't see why LM have been contacted because it would not seem reasonable for LM to price Advance tickets from Manchester to Worcester!

The Advance tickets you have found to Kidderminster are routed VWC & Connections, you could ask Virgin why they exist to Kidderminster and not Worcester. You could ask the same of XC who also have Advance tickets from Manchester to Kidderminster, and not Manchester to Worcester.

I contacted LM because my journey involves LM trains between Worcester and Crewe (then VT to Piccadilly).

The tickets were the same price to Kiddemrinster as they were to Smethwick GB. So in effect I got the Smethwick to Kidderminster part for free. Just cant see any logical reason why they cant just add the cost of a single to Worcester to the price of the advance ticket to Kiddy. People are paying £10 more than they should.

But they are highly unlikely to introduce a flow of LM & Connections tickets to Manchester!

You can get an LM only Advance fare as far as Crewe, where you can then get a Virgin-only walk-on ticket to Manchester, though whether or not this benefits you will depend on what the ticket availability is like for the day & time you wish to travel.

This sort of issue occurs all over the country and is highly unlikely to change unless there are drastic changes to the fare structure and franchises.
