I am travelling from Swindon to Paddington today but diverting to Newbury on the way. I intend to buy a gold card day return from PAD to NBY and a single from SWI to RDG as I think this is the cheapest way. Will Swindon ticket office be able to issue the £5 first class supplement available to gold card holders as it is not in the area. I had enough trouble getting one issued at Victoria. My gold gard is HIT to KGX so no duplication there.

You should be able to attempt to get the supplement at Paddington before you travel if you show them your ticket from SWI to RDG, this may avoid confusion later on.

Discounted tickets may only be purchased for journeys on services operated by the participating Train Companies and wholly within the area shown - click here for map - even if the Annual Gold Card itself allows the holder to travel outside the defined area or on other Train Companies.

I don't know if the first supplement counts as a discounted ticket.

Thanks for that. I'm not actually travelling out from Paddington, just buying a day return from there as it's only 10p more than the single and will cover me from RDG to NBY. Looks like the answer is I can't buy the supplement at Swindon station as it's outside the area. I've got a 10 min connection at Reading and may try to purchase there from the excess fares window.

Ah yes - I see exactly what you're doing now. It does look as if the £5 first supplement is available for areas wholly within the gold card zone only. I would think you could take advantage of it from RDG - NBY and NBY - PAD though. If no time is available to buy it at the station you should be able to purchase it for your return trip on the train - although it "should" be purchased before you travel.
