I am tempted to give EC another chance to deliver. £40 Highland Chieftain anyone?
Still only £37.80 Kings Cross to Inverness on the lowest tier, but I have to admit I am tempted to see if you do get 2 offerings if going KGX - INV.
Mind you a RailUK EC first class bash might also be fun.

I assume having had a quick look at this new offer that these are also quota controlled i.e. limited availability which could mean more or less tickets per train?

I am tempted by the East Coast offer BUT I have never ever purchased rail tickets on line. Is the system totally safe in the sense that there really will be tickets waiting for me at King's Cross?

If you select Ticket On Departure (TOD) as the delivery method then the ticket should be available for collection soon after booking (They say 2 hours but in reality it is usually much sooner.) from any TOD-enabled machine.

You can have them posted for a fee but you can pick them up from any station with ticket-on-departure machines.
I think the idea is that you pick them up when you start your booked journey (hence Ticket On Departure), but I always like to pick them up in advance just in case there are any "problems". As has been said, you can do this at any station with a TVM.

Just bought a normal Virgin Trains advance ticket and at the end a survey popped up. In addition to the usual questions were ones such as "would you have bought a ticket if you weren't using the chamber of commerce offer"?
This seemed odd, so a quick Google later and it seems Virgin has an offer for various chambers of commerce. An example from Liverpool is here:

FCC offer available for 5 free return tickets on FCC services when you sign up to receive updates. Warning though Martin Lewis is planning to put this in tomorrow's Money Saving Expert email so it might be withdrawn early.

Strange offer. It would seem to be aimed at people who already travel regularly between two stations rather than a way to encourage more off peak travel. Presumably the tickets can be shared and I wonder if there will be break of journey and/or time restrictions ?

I put in for some, as did my wife. She can then use them to come into London for free with me before the end of the year.
When you apply, it does seem as if you may be entered into a lottery or something. I wonder if some people will be rejected?
Now call me a cynic, but I wonder if these tickets will in fact just be the scratch cards they give to season ticket holders. On these, you can enter your own start/end station on the FCC route and scratch off the day. Now, the ones I had only had 2010 and 2011. Can you see where I'm going with this?

I've just done so too. I was a bit surprised that they said "Thank you for entering. We will be in touch if your entry has been successful" after I put in my details, I wonder whether I'm going to end up with a message in a few days saying I was unsuccessful as it has been over subscribed. I was also surprised that the offer states "Tickets are valid for a standard return journey on any First Capital Connect service until 31 December 2011", so presumably no peak time restrictions and if its taken literally, go anywhere on any train despite tha fact that you have to nominate starting and finishing stations although it may be that they are asking for your start/finish stations of regular journeys on FCC. Hers's hoping for days out in Brighton, Kings Lynn and....umm...Sutton?
The MSE website states that all the tickets must be for the same journey. I take this to mean the tickets you receive will be for the journey you enter into the form.
Whilst the Penalty Fares Appeal Support website says the tickets are for any journey on FCC.
Those making regular journeys between the two stations they nominate on the offer page may well already have a season ticket for that journey. It would be pointless for them to apply for the offer if the free tickets were only valid on their regular journey. I think it more likely these tickets will be for any return journey on the FCC network. Get those commuters to see the delights of the far flung reaches of FCC's network!

I've just applied. Interesting that the dropdown lists of stations include all the SET ones which operate as joint services. I can see some interesting conversations with SET RPIs if they are used on the wrong trains.
I'm sure the tickets that will be sent out will be those scratchcards that you then laminate (by peeling off the backing paper) and use.. so you'll be free to select any start/end station - but most likely only FCC stations.
Wouldn't it be typical if FCC ended up giving away free tickets and people then got penalty fares because they made out you could go to SET destinations?

I just seen on Money saving expert that they have now pulled the offer!!!!
Doesn't surprise me.
However, the T&Cs say the offer is open for 8000 entries. I hope they have pulled because they have reached that number and will still issue the tickets to the early applicants, including me !
