Local radio BBC Solent said that there were signalling problems at Basingstoke today and that XC were taking 45 minutes extra. It appears that trains were being sent via Guildford. Good job that they still have the service to Guildford for route retention purposes!

By via Guildford what do you mean? Reading–Guildford–Havant–Southampton? Havant isn't in XC's standard list of diversions IIRC.

(The only other route I can think of is Reading–Guildford–Woking–Basingstoke, which requires two reversals and crosses itself at Farnborough...)

Looking at the LDB - the 05.11 Manchester Picc - Bournemouth ran its normal route but is currently 65 down at Southampton and terminating at Brockenhurst, the 06.37 Nottingham to Bournemouth ran its normal route and is 6 down at Southampton and the 07.27 Manchester Picc to Bournemouth terminated at Birmingham NS.

All northbound XC ran their normal routes as well so doesnt look like any ran via Guildford

It appears the 05:09 from Southampton Central went disappeared after passing St Deny's and reappeared at Reading then was cancelled at New Street.

Havant definitely is covered by XC's normal route knowledge though. The once a day Guildford service runs ECS to/from Eastleigh via Havant, Fareham and Botley.

So, hypothetically as it doesn't seemto have happened, Readimg, Guildford, Havant, Fareham, but what then? Direct to Spouthampton, or via Eastleigth with a reversal?

In the past, with engineering works, it was via Swanwick and St Denys to Southampton Central. That morning, Radio Solent was saying that trains were not stopping at Parkway and Winchester.

Wouldn't surprise me if XC did divert via Guildford last Saturday, and to be fair to XC, who can blame them for that!...

What the problem was, was that there was a total signal failure loss of the Basingstoke area - mostly on the northern side including the Reading branch and the area up towards Farnborough - Ouch!

Fortunately i was heading westbound on Saturday morning on the retimed 07:38 (Waterloo - Exeter service, diverted via Southampton Central due to gauge enhancement works near Andover)...But even at 07:30, our service was delayed by 5 minutes - sat outside the station, all the morning FGW Services were cancelled, Reading branch was backed up with Freight - 4 stuck on the branch, Freightliner moved into the station - which in turn blocked two crossovers west of the station (Up slow to Up Fast, Up fast to Up Slow), Two Voyagers backed up behind, 1 444, 1 pair of 450s on the Down Fast stopped, with our 159 moved across to depart from platform 1 - the only signal appearing to still work...

And with the delays and backlog continuing on well into the afternoon, last Saturday certainly wasn’t a pretty day to be Basingstoke based NR staff...

Not all northbound services ran their normal routes. I was at Guidlford at 6.30 in the morning waiting for the London train when a Voyager heading to Manchester passed through platforms 6 and 7.

Where did you get your information saying all northbound routes ran as normal?

One of the problems I think is that the different TOC control's initial reaction is to go for the standard alternative routes from their book of problem solving.

So you end up with the apparently contradictory suggestions on the national rail disruptions page, where XC (possibly from a Midlands perspective - see below) are saying use LM and VWC to Euston then onward by SWT, which is probably their standard response to problems in the Reading area.

Now if SWT just see it initially as a problem with their trains from Waterloo getting past Basingstoke, one of their standard solutions is to advise passengers to use FGW and XC - so that comes up on National Rail as well - and there's the confusion. Someone touched on this in one of the other threads about this incident.

Also, on a normal Weekday or Saturday morning, 8 (possibly 9) units leave Eastleigh for various origins including all the early starters from Reading, Southampton, Bournemouth, and of course Guildford. If most of them were delayed for ages south of Basingstoke, there'd be knock on problems as far as Manchester by the end of the morning - which means using LM and VWC remained sensible advice.

As Oracle says, when it is planned it is via Netley. Of course, if a XC service arrived at Fareham at some random time and the normal service was already running, I expect it would depend on exactly when in the hour it happened to show up.

If the train just in front approaching Fareham was the SWT all stations stopper, it might make more sense to run via Botley and Eastleigh and reverse - and as I pointed out earlier they have normal route knowledge for this from the Guildford ECS...
