I've been looking up the possibilities on the National Rail Site for Anglia Rovers.

The map shows 3 zones, but not all of the various tickets available refer to these zones.
The 3 in 7 costs £30 but makes no reference to the zones.
The single day ranger likewise makes no reference.

The 7 day however has specific fares for all the different zonal combinations, a 7 day for all 3 zones is £96.50.
This means that if the 3 day is valid in all zones, 3x3 day is cheaper than a 7 day.

Help!! - is this an anomaly or is the 3 day actually 3 different rovers, each for one zone only?
And likewise the single day - is this all zones or one zone only?

Blimey that was quick, I knew someone local to the area would know.
So 9 days is £6.50 cheaper than 7 days....
Should have guessed really.

Many thanks..

The 3 in 7 Rover and the Day Ranger are valid within the whole A+ Area;

  • Norwich to Sheringham, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and between Norwich and Cambridge.
  • The GEML from Norwich to Ipswich.
  • The Bury St Edmunds line, Stowmarket to Cambridge \ Ely.
  • The East Suffolk Line between Ipswich and Lowestoft \ Felixtowe

On any service provided by the following operators:
  • First Capital Connect
  • East Midlands Trains
  • National Express East Anglia
Note that this ticket is not valid on any services provided by CrossCountry however a polite word with the guard to see if they'll pass it won't do any harm, the worst they can say is no. I have been passed on XC services before. (EDIT - PLEASE SEE MY POST BELOW.)

The ticket has a time restriction, it is not valid on any services timed to depart before 0845 with some exclusions Monday to Friday and at anytime on Weekends \ Bank Holidays.

The exclusions are as listed on National Rail:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/promotions/pr7a1a85c35ce741018bbf333fb1a59f/details.html said:
  • Saxmundham 08:21 (and intermediate stations to Ipswich)
  • Norwich 08:23 (Sheringham service)
  • Sheringham 08:25 (and intermediate stations to Norwich)
  • Ely 08:30 (Liverpool Street via Ipswich service).
  • Thurston 08:30 (Ipswich service)
  • Elmswell 08:37 (Ipswich service)
  • Norwich 08.36 (Great Yarmouth service)
  • Norwich 08.40 (Cambridge service)
  • Cambridge 08.43 (Ipswich service)
  • Lowestoft 08.42 (Norwich service)
  • Ipswich 08.44 (Norwich service)
  • Brandon 08.44 (Norwich service)

I'm not to sure about the 7 day rovers as I have never used them, I hope this helps you.

Cheers!

I've too have never had the need to look at the 7 day or longer period tickets.

There seems to be no mention of the 'not before 08.45' weekday restriction (and exceptions) in the conditions for the longer period tickets.

Which would mean that the tickets are aimed at a totally different market.

PS. If you are planning a visit then some extra time at Sheringham to explore the North Norfolk Railway might be of interest.

I was aware that XC have somehow managed to duck out of this one, rather like they got out of New St - Cheltenham a few years ago on the Heart of England (now valid again though).

Thanks again, the 3 in 7 is looking like very good value for a short break in Anglia.
Just got to get to Ipswich.....

And I'd already planned to get one to Sheringham for the next one back, the turnround there is pretty sharp.

Hello Again, having received a PM from another member who I won't name I have realised that, arguably, some of my advice above could be incorrect.

I refer back to a thread from July 2011, specifically the post by yorkie, this post relates to a clause in the National Rail Conditions of Carriage which states:

B. VALIDITY OF TICKETS
10. Tickets valid only in trains of particular Train Companies

The validity of a ticket may:
a) be restricted to; or
b) prohibit
travel in the trains of a particular Train Company or Train Companies. Any such restriction
or prohibition will be shown on the ticket
. If you travel in a train with a ticket that is not
valid, the relevant parts of Condition 2 or 4 will apply. If you are unable to use a ticket or
any part of it, you may be able to claim a refund under Condition 26 or Condition 36.

Attached are two scans of a day ranger and a 3 in 7, neither show a routing like 'Not XC', the restriction is not shown on the ticket. Arguably the restriction is not enforceable.

I don't risk it personally, I always ask the guard before travelling. However if someone were to board an XC between Ely / Cambridge (visa - versa) and gets challenged then refuse to pay anything, there are two things that the guard can do. Issue you a UPFN (Un-Paid Fares Notice) which you can then contest or report you for prosecution and go to court. The forum will support anyone who gets caught up in this.

Not every one has access to the internet and when you buy the ticket, in most cases the clerk won't tell you about the restriction, some may never be aware of it.

Though I would never directly ask for a UPFN as the guard is then likely to ask how you know about them they might begin to suspect that you are in fact an experienced fare dodger (saying "I heard about them on an internet forum" isn't the strongest response). A better approach to ask what the procedure is rather than ask to be given a UPFN.

It is more than likely that when Central Trains was split up whoever updated the info at ATOC/NRE replaced Central Trains with EMT & did not realise that XC had taken over the Stanstead service.

Blimey - bit of a hornet's nest then this one.
XC only operate the West Mids - Stansteads in the rover's region don't they?
In that case it's unlikely that I'd need to use an XC service, there's plenty of other services Ely - Cambridge.

I don't see this as a big deal. In the highly unlikely event of being asked to pay, I'd suggest firstly not contesting the request but merely asking if there is a procedure to pay later (ainsworth74 is right here!), and if not then pay up. Then alert us and we'll provide assistance. But I've heard numerous people say that they have had no problems whatsoever, and have heard no reports of anyone being charged (if they were, we'd have drafted a letter for sure, and our letters rarely get anything less than a successful response).

I agree with collybs that it's probably an oversight, and there have been numerous oversights when franchises have changed - for example XC setting some fares on the West Coast route, over which they operate no services whatsoever.

Compliance with the National Rail Conditions of Carriage is mandatory for all TOCs.

I use Anglia Rover tickets a fair bit.

Never once have I even considered that I might want/need to squeeze amongst the bags, cases, prams and people to board a XC service between Ely and Cambridge!

And the OP seems to be quite happy with the alternatives.

Could the company say that as the ticket does state "Validity: As Advertised" that you're supposed to have trawled through all the small print in any available leaflet or the website? But then, which leaflet or website?

Yes, National Rail Enquiries lists only the TOCs specified above. But I cannot find any onward reference on this page from NXEA's own site http://www.nationalexpresseastangli...et-options/leisure-tickets/rangers-and-rovers of where to find zones, maps, or any restriction on train companies.

What do any printed leaflets say?

No wonder the OP was confused. Why can't TOCs stick to an agreed format for publicising such tickets so that they all give the same essential information concisely and consistently?

Ignore the Zone thing, it is complete rubbish and is never ever used, the simple rule to remember is as far south as Ipswich, and West as Ely and Cambridge.

Also, for some reason a few years ago, me and my family went to Harwich, and the person sold us a Anglia Plus ticket, without us realising. Which was fun explaining.

It isn't - they are used for the 7+ day variants.

As yorkie says I have sort of made a big deal out of the XC validity, its arguable, we don't know of anyone having been pulled up about it but there is the chance. Lets leave it with the OP to decide
