Hey,

For the past couple of weeks, NXEA have been sending up 170s from somewhere to go on the 09:44 London to Norwich working, now a 3 car train is not really enough even on a Sunday, and it has caused it to be packed.

Last Sunday, the set I was on decided to make a humongous racket which was just irritating, even though my journey was 15 minutes long.

Anyone know why?

I meant to mention that, however it really shouldn't make a difference. In fact it should make it easier. Less of a route to cover, but no National Express must put on noisy 170s compared to quiet and comfy Mk3s.

OHL isolated, would you prefer a DMU or bus then?

Was it just that service that's used a 170? When I was changing trains at Ipswich two weeks ago, around lunchtime and late afternoon, all the "intercity" services were mark 3 +90s

No, It wasn't. The 09:55 was that one (when it ran London to Peterborough).

However the 09:44 has been a MK3+90s for the last 2 years. I would understand if it was a 4 coach Class 321 as the capacity would be better, and it would be alot of fun (100mph on them between Ipswich and Needham :D).

However a noisy and slow 170 (in both cases) doesn't help.

In addition the staff don't know its happening and the Information Screens, don't state a short formed train and still say "A buffet car service is avaliable"

But then this is NXEA.

I know this may sound a little harsh, but would you want a train service provided with a 3 car Turbostar or no train service atall? I don't really see your point that turbostars are noisy and slow, the turbostars are capable of 100mph, only 10mph than a 90 Set IIRC and the same speed as a 321. Yes their acceleration may be a little different but that shouldn't affect journey times. I find 170's very nice units to travel on!

Have you ever used NXEA 170s which have been run into the ground?

Also, standing room only on a train at 09:44 on a Sunday?

I work & travel on NXEA 170s all the time. Noise is not usually an issue i would have with them unless maybe sitting near a vestibule with isolated doors. In fact i enjoy the smooth quiet ride to/from Cambridge even in standard class. MK3s are great but if end door stuck open can also be very draughty. Norwich London will lose no time whatsoever with these dmus as can easilly keep to the schedule.

Only problem apart from overcrowding if only a single unit is the lack of catering. Then again the 09.44 (08.30 ex-Lst) starting its diagram from the London end, there would be none on this service anyway.

I think the noise was probably a unit issue. Where was the train coming from if the service was being started at Shenfield?

Probably Norwich Crown Point  I don't think NX have anywhere else to maintain DMU's.

Says something about Bombardier's build quality!

Glad someone said it!...That'll be just about every panel rattling and buzzing by the sounds of it, something the 168/170 Fleet has never been particually good with!

Bbbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

- Noticeable at around 1.40 & 1.55 in this video - and that's just ideling!

[OffTopic] Seems like you've inadvertantly linked to our very own Simon Poole  [/OffTopic]

I only find this when idling, not whilst moving :?:

Noticed

Unfortunatly ive noticed this both idling and on the move - something that does slightly put me off using Chilterns 168s from Marleybone up to Birmingham...I had one last november that was almost constant bbbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing both on idle and powering up / powering down...

Most of the time ive noticed it seems to happen in the panels around the door area, but also along the ceiling panels in the saloon area...Unsuprisignly, it seems to really only be a Bombardier based problem!
