Mate of mine will be travelling down to London for a conference on a Monday mid November. Rather than flying down on the Monday morning, they're thinking about taking the train down on a Friday evening and back on the Monday evening and spending the weekend visiting me.

(He'll cover the difference in the unlikely event that it costs the company more than the flight.)

With the right return ticket, is Edinburgh-Preston-Birmingham-Reading-London a valid route and would it be acceptable to disembark at Oxford without continuing the journey?

Well Edinburgh to London is Route ANY PERMITTED, I haven't looked at the routing guide but I see no reason why it wouldn't be valid. I would be surprised if via Birmingham, Reading and into Paddington wasn't valid.

I am sure that Scotland to London has always been a permitted route via Reading and Oxford.

Edinburgh-London is valid into Paddington, Marylebone, Euston, St Pancras, Kings Cross or Liverpool Street on map AS.

Break of Journey at Oxford should be fine.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I've since been looking for a valid fare for the routing, but don't see one...

What the best standard "open return" fare available from Haymarket to London Terminals valid out on a Friday evening, returning on a Monday evening. Return journey will be a straight Kings X - Edinburgh.

Super Off-Peak using the recently allowed 'break on the outbound journey' rules is your best bet. You may have to wait until the 1819 when returning on Monday however

For how many days are you allowed to "break your journey" on the outward portion of a Super Off Peak return ?
OP may have some problems getting down from Edinburgh (EDB) to Oxford (OXF) on an evening train. The last train to leave EDB, which allows for connections to OXF, departs as early as 1700. It requires changes at Newcastle and Birmingham New Street (BHM). Arriving Oxford at 23.14.
The latest train to OXF via Preston is the 16.52 dep from EDB to BHM which requires a change at Wolverhampton and arrives OXF 22.14

EDB - London Super Off Peak Return ( Any Permitted Route so valid via Oxford) at £114.60 is cheaper than the EDB - OXF Off Peak Return ( via Birmingham) which is £120.60 !!

The Edinburgh - Oxford Super Off Peak Return rte Any Permitted @ £134.70 is more expensive than the Edinburgh - London equivalent, however, allows travel on later trains from Edinburgh on the Friday (both the 17:30 & 18:12 going via London) and would also have the potential to provide any travel from Oxford to London on the Sunday or even Monday morning (as it is shown as being valid on trains from Oxford to London from 0731 on the Monday -although the OP isn't clear whether coverage of the journey from Oxford to London is required with the ticket).

Just to clarify.

They're hoping to grab the 16.56 from Haymarket, arriving into Oxford around 10.15.

Not at all worried about the journey from Oxford into London on the Monday morning. Originating station would have to be Edinburgh/Haymarket and destination station would have to be London - this is because it's being booked via a company travel agent.

That's very useful to know for my own future travel arrangements!

What's are the restrictions on it?

You won't be able to start a journey on a Friday, break it for the whole weekend, and resume it (on the outward portion) on Monday, unless you have an Anytime Return ticket.

Solutions would include buying a combination of tickets, or a ticket to Oxford and use the return portion on Monday.

If the need to make this journey on one ticket, then the cheapest semi-flexible option I can find is:
Off-Peak Return Edinburgh - Oxford route Not London £120.60
them excess the return leg to a
Super Off-Peak Return Edinburgh - Oxford route + London (£134.70)
which costs half the difference (£7.05), giving a total of £127.65.
But this ticket is heavily restricted from London on weekdays, see Validity code 1K.

If, instead, the need is to make best use of a ticket which must have "Edinburgh" as the origin and must have "London Terminals" as the destination, then either
Super Off-Peak Return Edinburgh - London Terminals £114.60
or
Off-Peak Return Edinburgh - London Terminals £202.70
is likely to be suitable depending on the departure time from London on the return leg.

Either of these tickets can be used on the Friday for Edinburgh - Oxford via Banbury and for ending the outward leg at Oxford, but a separate ticket would be needed for Oxford - London on the Monday. An Oxford - London single is £26 in the morning peak, and £21.60 for trains due to arrive after 0959.
