Those of use who have been around in the hobby for quite a while will no doubt remember the 'Loco-Hauled Travel' and 'Diagram Diary' books published by Platform 5 and Metro Enterprises in the 1980s and 1990s. For those who aren't familiar with the books, they detailed loco diagrams for all classes, and later editions also included headcode listings. (HSTs were excluded for the first 10 years or so - for a start, they were officially classified as units until around 1987, secondly very few people were interested in them and most tended to avoid them, and thirdly, the all-line timetable recorded which trains were HSTs in it.)

The recent threads on diagrams made me wonder how many people would actually consider buying such a publication nowadays if it existed, perhaps even one including units given that there seems to be a growing interest in people actively going to travel on them. Or do people nowadays have an expectation that all 'gen' should be provided for free?

Before anyone asks, I am not considering producing such a book! I'm just interested in people's thoughts.

Yes such a publication would be interesting but with the number of loco hauled trains now compared to say 1991 or even 1998, is it really going to be financially viable?

Now as www.thejunction.org.uk already has something similar set up, if it isn't going to be financially viable to produce a publication then all efforts should be made to allow this site to display these diagrams without requiring membership and keeping them there for reference purposes.

Think you've touched on the problem - these days it is quite easy to have a look around the net and find diagrams or sightings, so I bet some would feel aggreived if they had to shell out a few quid for them.

When you think how high-tech trainspotting is now it really does make you think of the progress made with technology in the last few years!

With the internet and XML, nope!

It actually had a headcode as its title which went up each year with accompanying photo of loco bearing it "1H85" was the last I bought and I defo' have it somewhere

Oh happy days!!!

Its amazing how far we have come.

I think that the only way that you could get a "book" like the one suggested in the OP to work would be to aim it at the older enthusiast and make it a fairly "bespoke" publication.

My dad isn't online, so he relies on getting his gen from the press (he buys a lot of magazines each month...) - there is still a generation of enthusiasts out there who aren't online so can't easily find this kind of information out.

There is a bigger problem here which all newspapers/ magazines (etc) are going to have to deal with - why pay money for information which is available for free online?

You can find diagrams on the net??!?!?!?!? I know the 125 group has IC125 diagrams on their website, but I requested ATW's diagrams via my AM and we were told they are commertially confidential. In what way are rolling stock diagrams commertially sensitive?

The '1Hxx' series of books were different series produced by Peter Watts Publishing.

And judging by the number of requests on here, quite a lot of diagrams appear not to be on the interenet - or people don't know where or how to find them!

I am not to bothered about diagrams. But if I remember correctly those books just showed a list of loco hauled services from major stations.
Maybe a list of classes and a then a list of what services are operated by those classes would be useful

If it's restricted to loco-hauled services this would just about fit on a cigarette paper, never mind needing a book!

Well I think most enthusiasts would already know the handful of loco hauled services. But a rundown of units and what routes you could find them on would be useful I reckon

I guess it depends on whether you count HSTs as locos - but I'm opening another can of worms with that one.

That was another publication - "CLASS ONE" - which was published
by myself for several years as a companion volume to Freightmaster:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/CLASS-ONE-MARK-RAWLINSON/dp/B000S3ID7G/

(as well as the timetables, there were also loco diagrams for 47s, 86s, etc,
at the back of the book)

...but the end of loco haulage on VXC and VWC meant the book was
no longer viable, so the few remaining diesel-hauled trains were listed
in Freightmaster (they mainly use freight company locos anyway!)
and Class One ceased to be published.

They could sell them to people for money.

I'd forgotten about your 'Class One' books Mark. Just checked my bookcase and I have 4 editions dating between 1998 and 2002. Was Summer 2002 the last edition to be produced?

I think it's quite telling how enthusiasts were never big on HSTs in the 70s and 80s when they were new, but nowadays, they have a reverence with a lot of people (I'm a huge HST fan!). I wonder if we'll see something similar with Pendolinos or Javelins in 30-odd years time?

I agree with you - the (brand new) HSTs were bad for killing off the beloved Deltics, but then the (brand new) Deltics were bad for killing off Steam on the ECML...

By 1H84 they were in Platform 5 guise!: did peter watts do "miles and chains"?

Once they start de-engining 156s/58s and making them up as rakes of loco hauled stock with actual passenger capacity, we may need 1H20!

1H84 was definately not a Platform 5 publication - see http://www.magictrick.freeserve.co.uk/publications.htm

Peter Watts did 'Mile by Mile' (written by David Maxey). The 'Miles & Chains' pocket books were produced by Geoff Hurst of Milepost Publications.

I would love to see a printed list of accurate mileages. I sort of remember the miles and chains book. I wonder if anyone would publish that sort of info.

The Quail maps have them in if you want a printed version. A reprint of the 'Mile by Mile' book is still available as far as I know (in softback) - unfortunately, being about 20 years old it does have new stations/lines missing.

I have Quail maps. I was thinking more of a table of accurate mileages either by route by franchise or by NRT table number perhaps.
I have done my own but they area bit out of date now

In printed form, yes.

I soldiered on with an online version until Winter 2004,
but even without the overheads of printing a book,
that too eventually proved unsustainable due to lack
of interest... .

Going back to loco diagrams, as recently as March 2003,
there were still a large number of class 87 workings on the WCML:
