On the Underground, Woodford has services in both directions to the core of the Central line.

Also as with the "Sutton" and "Fife Circle" answers above, there are plenty of loop options out there, especially in south London, such as Kingston, Sidcup and Crystal Palace.

The Southampton area has loop services to Romsey and Salisbury, and Fareham has (or at least had, I don't know if it still does) at least one service via Haslemere to London.
