Booking advance on East Coast, want to use a compensation voucher got for late running on previous trip. Can't use it for online tickets, which we normally buy. I know it can only be used on EC, but if we buy the ticket at the local station, which is run by South Eastern, then will they accept the voucher in part payment even if it is for another TOC?

Yes, of course. You can use Rail Travel Vouchers for any railway product.

Provided they are the green National Rail vouchers and not an operator specific voucher. The green vouchers do state on them which operator issued them but they aren't restricted to that operator's service.

They don't necessarily have to be green. Some fixed-value ones are of other colours. I attach an example.

Rail Travel Vouchers can be used on both
You can book online then send the vouchers as payment

I know that you can do this with telesales. Not aware that you can do this while purchasing tickets online.

You definitely can't with Virgin, or any other Trainline-powered site.

Telesales, as you say, can do it. You need to give 14 days' notice though, and you need to send the vouchers via Recorded Post (or similar).

Thanks for answers. Reading the small print again, vouchers can be used with "principal operating companies", so should not be a problem at the local station - but the letter with the voucher said could not be used for online purchases.

Would that include Railcards? I have a voucher and no way to use it at the moment as I buy most tickets on line before I travel!

Indeed. Northern have started issuing them as blue Northern branded vouchers. When someone presented me with one the other day I had to look at it closely to realise it was actually a Rail Travel Voucher that can be used on any rail company. With one like that I could see how the unwary would believe it was TOC specific. It really looked very much that way.
