Tomorrow I'll be travelling with my other half and my daughter from Slade Green to Lancing.

I'll be using my Family and Friends railcard and will purchase off-peak returns for the journey tomorrow which will cost £42.30 for all 3 of us.

We will be returning the same day but the off-peak day return is more expensive so getting the one that allows return up to a month instead :D

Usually, We travel up to London Bridge then down to East Croydon and change to the train straight to Lancing from there but I was wondering if we are permitted to travel from London Bridge to Brighton and change there instead for the onward connection to Lancing - as we may meet some friends there for the final leg of the journey.

If not I'll just do the trip as have done in the past! :)

Thankyou
Chris

Yes, you can definitely travel via Brighton. It is a routeing point group associated with Lancing and you may double back between members of a group as long as your destination is not part of the group, which it isn't in your case.

Perfectly valid it would appear. The journey planner allows it for sure. The Routeing Guide would also appear to allow it.

Edit: Beaten to it!

Hope this isn't bad news, but might a Southern DaySave have been cheaper? All three of you could've traveled on a group ticket for £24. The DaySave is only valid on Southern trains, so your journey to and from London Bridge would need an off-peak Travelcard at £12.60 (2 adults and 1 child with railcard). That would make a total of £36.60.

I've used a Southern DaySave before, but I believe they have to be booked at least 7 days in advance and I only found out my trip was confirmed on Friday :)
In fact had I had that option using Oyster PAYG between Slade Green and London Bridge may well have been even cheaper!!!

Thankyou though :)

You're right, they do have to be bought 7 days in advance. However, Southern also have an All Network Downlander. It allows use of the entire network, just like the DaySave, but only requires 2 days' advance purchase, so you would've been just in time if you'd bought it on Friday. They call it an e-ticket, but it should really be "p-ticket" as you have print it off! The price for 2 adults and 1 child would've been £27.50.

Enjoy Lancing regardless!

Thankyou again,
I had heard of the Downlander but I didn't realise it also covered the whole of the Southern network in the same way as the DaySave.
For some reason I thought it was just in the country areas and not all the way up to London :)

I will definately bear that in mind though. Don't mind printing off tickets as at least I've got them before leaving the house rather than taking the usual gamble of ticket office being open or the machine being out of action :)

There are two Downlanders. The basic one is just the downs to the coast while the all network version is what it says - all Southern services except Gatwick Express.

Hi all,
Back from Lancing however do have one minor query.
Was told at the station that the off-peak return is NOT valid for return the same day as the outward journey!
So ended up having to buy a off-peak day return for a few pence more.

I'm 99.9% sure that that is the wrong info but due to lack of time as we were running behind and I knew we were coming back the same day I just grabbed the day return! :)

Can someone confirm/deny that the off-peak return is valid for a return journey on the same day?

I've not heard that one before. The Southeastern website will sell you the off-peak return for an itinerary specifying return travel on the same day. I'd fill in the comments form on their website and see what response you get.

I'm wondering if its because in normal circumstances most people returning the same day would buy a day return but in my case the day return is a few pence more expensive than the more flexible off-peak return.

So logically thinking..coming back today - need off peak day return coming back tomorrow or within a month need off peak return!

I will see what Southeastern say as I'm sure they'll love to hear from me again....

Just for interest, the issues on FCC actually helped me get to Brighton as we ended up on a virtually empty train which arrived in Brighton just before 2pm but the train was scheduled to be there at about 11.45am - before I'd even left Slade Green!!!

Whether you can be bothered for the sake of 20p to contact SET us up to you. However in my opinion, it is a matter that needs to be brought to the attention of SET management. People cannot just make up rules as they go along, ignoring franchise commitments.

It was a dual purpose visit for us this time... Catch up with friends and also to go and see the local photographer in Lancing as he took pictures of our little one last year and we were so impressed we had to go back again this year :)

Nice little town :)
