an interesting story & pics in this weeks http://www.nwrail.org.uk/nwnews.htm

not sure which thread to put this in, the above story gives bad news for Birkenhead Tram Museum
& info on a Sunday Llandudno Junc to Manchester service running untimetabled. Also pics of Bangor stations new glass roof.

Also in this weeks issue, Man stops Voyager, opens doors & does a runner, because it did not stop at Conwy, story under Crimewatch

Thanks for the interesting link, living within walking distance of the transport museum and tramway, I have visited them a number of times in recent years. It's great when they have buses from all over the country there for the day, like they did a few weeks ago.

In fact I only visited this forum this morning because my train, the 08:04 from LIV to BHM was cancelled and I wanted to find some info on what might have happened. :D

I'm glad I saw this post though. Indeed the museum faces an uncertain future, there have been several articles on it in the local newspapers over the last few weeks, some of them viewable via Google news. I hope the museum and tramway can continue as they provide such an enjoyable day out for all. I don't fully understand the ins and outs of the situation, but Wirral just like other local authorities around the country are under pressure to concentrate on essential services in the current economic climate. Therefore it's looking like money is needed to be found from elsewhere.

...surely not the first person who's been desperate to escape from a Voyager

Do the Pass-Comm's on those not simply put you in touch with Driver rather than apply the brakes? Unless maybe he just went straight for the door release.

It's very sad the whole tramway operation needs to cease over the winter purely because of a lack of an electrician. Surely some arrangement could be reached either through a volunteer appeal or perhaps even hiring in somebody as required, after all Birkenhead isn't a million miles away from Blackpool and there will doubtless be some very qualified tramway electricians there with very little to do this winter

I am pleased the thread was of information, I have a friend who is a Manager at Wirral Metro Council, he informs me of lots of cuts, his job is at risk also, but I would have thought tourism would have been an highlight to Wirral, the problem with volunteers especially sparks, is that damned liability insurance & not all volunteers doing electrics can get covered, even though they are as qualified if not better qualified than those in paid positions.
The exclusions have to be read carefully to guarantee £10M cover, otherwise the Trustees homes are on the line & Councils support demands at least £10M cover.

Trouble is that Birkenhead does not get huge numbers of tourists in winter, even when the tramway is operating. Probably better to reduce costs now, in order to concentrate available funds to keep it in good condition for the busier summer season.
