Yes it does, you can enter the amount given to you and it will work out the change...but most of the time you work it out off the top of your head!

Most (if not all) ticket prices end in either £xx.00 or £xx.05, so not really hard to do some mental arithmetic. In a lot of cases the conductors are so used to giving out the same tickets that they know the prices off by heart.

But if you need to use it, you shouldn't have really got a Guards/Conductors job as everyone has to pass a maths exam during the testing day!

I sometimes have a brief phase of an hour or two when I just can't think straight and turn mine on. It's usually just after major service disruption and my brain just wants a rest :P

Never used the change function in my life. Reckon as you get the hang of selling tickets, your maths will improve sharply.

The main useful function is "Shopping Basket" - just like 'tinternet websites, you can pile a load of tickets into it and then simply press issue; it will also give you the total price.

Also useful are multiple tickets, ie 2 Adults, 2 kids, 1 sheep etc - this adds it up for you. Sometimes a pain if theres ticket barriers or the people are travelling back seperately.

Sorry to go on about this but I am on an induction course at the moment for Southern.

I was told when asked that you get as many attempts as you like to attend assessments for driver, conductor etc as long as you wait 6 months inbetween... Is there anyone out there who can confirm this? I realise passes are valid 5 years and I have passed role play and comprehension but need ticket selling/checking and group bourdon. I failed the concentration. I was thinking about career progression but interested how many attempts they give for each role.

Certainly for driver I thought it were two. I can not see how they can vary company to company either seeing as these tests are organised by another body

For drivers - You only ever get 2 fails at the test. As long as you keep passing the test you can resit it as many times as you wish.

It has now become something of a grey area where Guard recruitment and testing is concerned. I was always under the impression that you could sit the exams three times, and that was backed up by what our assessor said when I did mine. Our group were basically told "if you've had your three pops at it go home now as you'll be wasting your time..." etc. But some TOC's now appear to have scrubbed this rule and will tell people they can have as many goes as they like, just with a wait between. Some firms also seem to use slightly different test formats now, despite their having always been a 'standard' set of exams.

I would wait and see if you pass first. If you don't, they will tell you when you can try again.

Any assessment you sit for Train Driver using OPC assessments will be accepted by all TOC's, and you shouldn't have to sit the tests you've already passed again. You may have to do their own assessments though (as some add/remove bits).

2 attempts with the Same TOC when I started a few years back now - I had 2 fails with one and passed on my Third attempt.
