I think this also happened on the Lickey Incline after a class 47 failed many years ago. Some spoon bashers wanted to avoid haulage by the rescue loco (class 60) and bailed out. Presumably before hauled stock was fitted with central door locking.

Also saw something similar c.1990 when out photting at Oxford North Junction. XC train approaches heading south, but stops some distance from where I am standing (on a bridge); door at rear of train opens and person leaps onto the ballast, legging it off the railway before anyone can catch them :roll:

Can also remember some cranks bailing off this charter at Barry Island when they realised that they would be getting some 47 haulage!

A friend related a story which happened to a friend of hers. After a long trip (I think into Austria, somewhere in central Europe anyway), the friend woke from a doze to discover to their horror that the train was at her destination and they were about to be left behind. Gathering her bags, she ran to the door and threw them out - just as the train was starting to move - and then jumped out herself.

Dusting herself off, she then watched the train shunt forwards from the signal where it had been held a couple of hundred metres into her station

The best one I ever saw was back in 1985 on a loco hauled overnight train going south from Edinburgh. We were first stop Newcastle and shortly after departing from Waverley the guard checking tickets found a chap returning from an evening out in Edinburgh with a ticket to Berwick who seemed to think that everything going south would be bound to stop there. He wasn't impressed to be told that he'd have to travel back from Newcastle and shortly after passing through Berwick he disappeared into the vestibule. It was no great surprise when the brakes came on!
The next sound was the door opening and sunny Jim jumping down onto the ballast. The guard arrived soon after and, standing in the open doorway watching this chap haring off down the very steep embankment just off the Border Bridge (which I wouldn't fancy getting down even in daylight) he shouts, 'Come back here you bu**er!'. Needless to say, the bu**er kept on running!

Best one I saw was in Leeds around the year 2000. A Virgin XC HST from Penzance to Scotland, just about to pull away from the platform and the doors had just been locked. A late running passenger lobbed his bag through an open vestibule door window, and then proceeded to climb through said window even as the train was moving off at about 2mph! Platform staff didn't know what to do. By the time they'd ran forward and started shouting, he was already on the train.

Talking about Austria; there used to be a number of loco hauled peak hour trains between St. Pölten Hbf and Krems ad Donau of which one was non-stop between the two locations.

We had caught one train out to the junction station of Herzogenburg planning to phot the non-stop one passing through then catch one of the following ones. As the non-stop approached, it slowed down and I saw the rear-most set of doors open. At this point the signal on the end of the platform must have cleared so the driver whacked the loco wide open with resultant acceleration (only had about three coaches on) at which point a woman appears and leaps out the train going base over apex on the platform.

Luckily the only thing hurt appeared to be her pride as she got up, dusted herself down and rushed out of the station looking as though she wished the ground would open up and swallow her.

I have just remembered a more recent incident from Austria. On an IC train between Salzburg and Villach a couple of months ago, we were in the outskirts of the latter still travelling at a fair old lick when the brakes came on rather rapidly.

We ground to a halt then I became aware of the door alarm at the leading end of our coach sounding followed by a raised voice. Looking out of the window we noticed an oldish man (whom we had seen wandering rather vacantly down the train earlier) standing on the opposite track hock:

Luckily the guard wasn't far away and had him back into the train and the door shut fairly rapidly. I didn't stick around to see what the outcome was when we arrived at Villach but the idiot got his ears well bent for his escapade, could hear the b****cking with the vestibule door closed

I recall a few years back sitting in the station at Brussels Airport waiting for a train to Leuven, and watching an AM80 over the other side just about to leave. As the guard shut the doors, a guy came sprinting down the escalators and onto the station, by this point the train is already moving, but the guard keeps the local door open. The guy sprints along the platform, lobs his bag into the train then dives in after it
