We all have people who inspire/influence us in life. I wondered who yours was?

Whether it be a family member, a tv star, a sports star or just someone who passed on some very wise words to you at some point in life.

For me it has to be Bomber Command 1939-1945. I have no idea why i'm simply fascinated by them, or why i have the greatest crush on the Lancaster bomber, but the truth is i cannot look at a Lanc without a lump in my throat.....

Over to you...

There's a fair few names I could mention music-wise, but it all began for me with the Graceland album by Paul Simon. It used to be part of our cassette rotation in the car, and I became absolutely hooked on it.
I was meant to become a classical pianist, but from then on I wanted to do what he does!

I'll narrow that down a bit Wing Commander G.P. Gibson VC, DSO, DFC.
and 617 Squadron, showed what you can do if you're willing to push the envolope a bit and do brave/silly things with big aircraft.

Ive visited his memorial in Porth Leven. Also spent days milling around the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa. A great leader, although from what i can gather Guy wasn't well liked by his men.

I have a few heroes:

Brian Wilson, Nina Simone (do many men have female heroes?), Douglas Bader, my grandfather, my mum and dad, my late uncle (who being severely disabled taught me a lot about personal fulfilment and refusing to measure oneself against others), Ian Rush....oh, there's a few.

Speaker Lenthall, who said, when King Charles entered the House of Commons to arrest 5 'disruptive' MPs and asked where they were said:
"... I have neither eyes to see nor tongue to speak in this place but as the House is pleased to direct me...."

In the business world it would have to be the late Lord James Hanson. Very nice man, very knowledgeable and very shrewd. Handshake like a vice! He went far too soon.

I'm beginning to feel rather a sneaking regard for old Ollie Cromwell, continuing the English Civil War theme. Not only a remarkable general, but he soon came to realise the truth about most parliaments. "You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately ... Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!"

This may seem a strange choice for some but the biggest inspiration and influence in my life is me ....

I'll explain now. When I was 18, I was admitted to hospital in a hurry with appendicitis. When I was finally operated on, they found that my appendix had actually burst and I was in bad shape (early stages of peritonitis, but fortunately, they caught it in time). Obviously, a bit longer recovery and recuperation period for me due to how bad I was, but it gave me plenty of time to think about things and where my life was heading at the time.

It completely changed my attitude and outlook towards life, and basically gave me the confidence to do what I want, when I want (within reason and funds permitting) because you never know what's going to happen ....

Personally, a very good friend of mine, who shall remain nameless on here, but showed me to beleieve in myself and get appyling for jobs on the railway, helped me with my application and interview tips, and has been supportive throughout my career todate, which is to say only been quite short, but I've gone up the ranks very quickly thanks to having this person behind me!!

Chris Green. Someone who knows how to run a railway and who should have ended up as the head of British Rail.

My four grandparents.

All passed away many years ago, but they were an inspiration when I was young.
