Hi all

I'm travelling from Mossley Hill to Chesterfield at the moment. I'm on a TransPennine Express Manchester to Sheffield service with a ticket as far as Chinley.

My connection in Sheffield is 13 minutes and I'm sceptical as to whether I'll get chance to buy a Chinley to Chesterfield return on here. Because my train is an EMT (1828 I think) I'm worried about the possibility of a penalty fare if I don't get chance to purchase a ticket via the conductor or in Sheffield - I.e. If the train is late.

Can anyone advise whether I could get PFed if I don't get a ticket? I've no intention of dodging any fare.

Thanks tom

Unless Mossley Hill is in a PF zone (pretty sure it's not), then no you can't.

If there was an open ticket office then only undiscounted Anytime tickets should be offered, if not then you should be offered the full range of tickets.

I'll taken trains:

MSH to Liverpool SP
Liverpool Sp to Manchester P
Manchester P to Sheffield
Sheffield to chesterfield

Hold a southport to chinley return portion, no ticket office at chinley, could I buy a cly to chd return on the train?

According to NRES, Mossley Hill is not in a Penalty Fare zone. However, it also says the ticket office should have been open.

I've got a ticket that covers me from there.
I think I'll be ok getting my chinley to chesterfield return on the EMT. Is it cheaper to alfreton? Anyone know?

Hi all

okay, depending on your exact circumstances, my recommendation is that you ensure you request a ticket from the guard from Chinley before the train calls at Chinley.
My connection in Sheffield is 13 minutes and I'm sceptical as to whether I'll get chance to buy a Chinley to Chesterfield return on here.
You should buy the ticket(s) you need at the first opportunity. As I have no information about what opportunities you have or had not had so far, it is difficult to comment. However, if you have not yet had an opportunity then you do not need to delay yourself by missing a connection in order to create one.
Because my train is an EMT (1828 I think) I'm worried about the possibility of a penalty fare if I don't get chance to purchase a ticket via the conductor or in Sheffield - I.e. If the train is late.
I wouldn't have thought you could be issued a Penalty Fare if you start your journey at a non-Penalty Fare station, unless you pass through a compulsory ticket area (CTA), there is no CTA at Sheffield. So I don't think you can be issued a PF.
Can anyone advise whether I could get PFed if I don't get a ticket?
They may try but I do not think it would be legitimate. Why are you not able to get the Chinley-Chesterfield ticket on the train to Sheffield? If the guard's machine is broken that's not your fault and you can buy on the next train.
I've no intention of dodging any fare.
I doubt anyone would accuse you of that (a Penalty Fare is nothing to do with fare dodging by the way), but the guard may wonder why the Manchester-Sheffield guard didn't sell you a ticket.

But that does mean you have turned down one opportunity, if you take the whole journey as one. Now, that isn't a problem providing you ensure you purchase a ticket before you reach Chinley. If you do not, you would need to alight at Chinley, and start a new journey in my view...

... however, if the guard's ticket machine is not working on the Manchester-Chinley-Sheffield train*, then on this occasion, given that Chinley station is unstaffed, you can legitimately buy a Chinley-Chesterfield (or Alfreton) ticket on the train from Sheffield.

(* I assume this is why you have been unable to buy a ticket between Manchester and Chinley/Sheffield?)

I think I'll be ok getting my chinley to chesterfield return on the EMT. Is it cheaper to alfreton? Anyone know?
Chinley - Chesterfield
SDR £13.70

Chinley - Alfreton
CDR £11.00
SDR £12.00
SVR £15.30

You don't understand, if the station where you started your journey is in a Penalty Fares Zone (like Southport is) you can be given a Penalty Fare. If it is not, but a ticket office is open, you should only be given the option of Anytime fares. If it is not in a Penalty Fare Zone and there was no ticket office or it was not open, you have more options.

I'm in sheffield. No inspection on the train from Manchester to Sheffield. I've 8 minutes to get the train and I've just stood all the way.

I'll buy on board. Need a ticket back anyway, taking the 2247 from Sheffield to Chinley. Off to Chesterfield v Tranmere. Been a long day!

In that case, I would simply ask for the Chinley to Alfreton ticket on the train from Sheffield to Chesterfied (unless your train is from Platform 1 and there is no queue at the ticket office!), as there are no ticket issuing facilities at Chinley and there was no opportunity to buy a ticket on the first train.

Had the ticket office at Chinley been open (is there one there?) then this option would not have been available to you, as if you ask for the ticket as part of a combination of tickets for a journey from a Mossley Hill, then as the ticket office was open at Mossley Hill the guard could legitimately state that you declined an opportunity to buy before boarding, and could issue a full-fare SDS/SDR with no Railcard discounts.

If you did ignore the ticket office at Mossley Hill then you are lucky really that you are "splitting" at a station with no ticket issuing facilities, don't forget to bear in mind last year's advice about buying at the first opportunity.

To further complicate things, even if Chapeltom had started at Southport, they couldn't be issued a PF from Sheffield as they are in different PF zones.

My apologies, I got awfully confused! I bought a Chesterfield to Chinley single for £7 in the end, reasonable enough to me.

I'll know for next time I do a cross-Pennine trek.
