Just heard on the news there is a train on fire in Manchester Picadilly, any more information?

Just missed the main information, but 17 firefighters are said to be on the island platform. Passengers on the main station are said to be forbidden access to platforms 13 or 14. Since this is the only through line, you can imagine the disruption to services.

If that's the case then how come nobody was reported as being on the train? Can't imagine that during the evening rush hour.

Well, that's typical local TV reporting for you. I think what they meant to say was that passengers on the main Manchester Piccadilly station area were not allowed to proceed to platforms 13 or 14 to catch services that normally use these two platforms. I was too late to hear the main part of the newsflash where passengers who were actually on the train were spoken of.

Nope, error on my behalf completely, see my above post.

They then proceed a short distance out of the station area and park on a line next to the retaining wall that runs parallel to Temperance Street in Ardwick. until it is time for them to run the service back to Llandudno.

Yes, but during the period of time between being taken out of passenger service and waiting for a path south it could have, erm, burst into flames.

From what I have been reading on WNXX it seems that 175110 has had a serious engine fire which then re-ignited after the fire brigade arrived.

Lets hope they can get this unit back out into service as soon as they can. I am sure ATW are going to need it.

It was the 17:50 Piccadilly-Llandudno, which comes in ECS from the Mayfield Loop, hence why no passenger on the train.

I was actually on Manchester Piccadilly platform 14 when it happened.

The 1750 to Llandudno had loaded in the platform, and then white smoke began to appear from the underframe of the last coach. The passengers were disembarked, and told to return to the main part of the station concourse. The whole section including the island platforms and the bridges was then closed, as the fire brigade arrived. I saw no flames, just the smell of burning and grey/white smoke, which began rising into the Costa above.

Passengers for Liverpool Lime St were asked to make their way to Oxford Rd station, where I presume all traffic from the west was terminating/departing.
Realising there was not going to be anything to North Wales for some time, I joined the 1830 ATW to Carmarthen and travelled via Crewe, to find the 1923 Chester shuttle was cancelled, so had to wait for the 1956 Virgin, which suited me, but it meant those travelling just to Chester were very delayed.

was on this the other day, in coach a - the engine sounded odd underneath in this carriage, though nothing too drastic.

Also I thought these units were supposed to have gone through a major overhaul recently to improve the reliabilty? Two years ago 175109 had a fire and also 175008 a couple of years before that.

Is it anything to do with the hydro-dynamic brake? I read on here a couple of months back that Alstom were thinking of reinstating this on a trial basis after it had been isolated a couple of years back due to hot oil burning the gearbox.

i was sat in rear coach of llandudno train when we were told to get off for a minute, from the back you could see flames underneath the rear coach, the platform staff soon cleared the platforms 13 & 14 once the smoke got to bad, once they turned ole off there was chaos as passengers on some northern services were detraining onto running lines near ardwick.

Sounds like arriva are being tight on the maintenance again. I think the Dft need to be asking some very serious questions as to the quality of Arriva's maintenance on these units as it isnt the first time one of these has caught fire under Arriva's care.

They are maintained by Alstom for Arriva.

So from early indications can we expect to see 110 in service anytime soon, if at all?

On the subject of being tight on maintenance, I remember recently reading that Alstom provide 24 a day for service which isn't much of a squeeze on maintenance given it's a small fleet. What's more I believe in the early days FNW put pressure on Alstom to provide 25 a day and that was when they were notorious for being unreliable. Arriva also have the problem of the WAG insisting that the Holyhead-Cardiff's and the WAG2 be worked by 175s.

175 reliability is definitely not the problem of ATW!

From what I have just read on the WNXX forum 175110 is now undergoing a overhaul and could be back in service around 20th novermber.
