(Prices quoted all monthly.)

Season required. No early bird.

Straight through ticket costs £296.50. Currently my best attempt is Stalybridge (£283.40).

Anything better?

Sheffield to Manchester is a well known rip-off, you'll struggle to get it much cheaper than that.

A GMPTE Traincard at £83.00
Strines-Sheffield 1 Month is about £210

So £293 but get to travel all over Greater Manchester for no extra and in 1st Class on TPE at weekends...

GM Traincards are valid to/from New Mills Central (due to a franchise commitment made by FNW, inherited by Northern in 2004).
New Mills Cen-Sheffield= £202.40 per month

When you say, "No Early Bird" do you mean that it's "Not an option for you"? as, there IS an Early Bird Sheffield-Manchester season £183.20pmth
Restriction : EARLY BIRD SEASON TICKET
OUTWARD TRAVEL
Service to ARRIVE at its destination before 0730.
RETURN TRAVEL
DEPART between 1000 and 1600 or after 1830

What is this TPE First Class weekend easement?

Well the NRE website says £215.50 for Sheff-Stalybridge with the caveat "Travel is allowed by any route option shown by the Journey Planner where the journey can be made using only one ticket.". I just planned a journey using the journey planner and it comes up with Sheffield-Stalybridge going via Manchester as an option... so that means the £215.50 ticket is valid?!

MS is a valid map for Sheffield - Stalybridge.

Sheffield - Manchester - Stalybridge is traceable on Map MS so is valid on an Any Permitted ticket.

How did you get the £215.50 fare? I can't seem to find it.

It was advice for a friend, so I eventually told him to buy Thurnscoe - Stalybridge as that cost the same as a Sheffield - Stalybridge and allowed him to go to Leeds, Wakefield and Doncaster for leisure.

Hmmm I can't find it now either! Must've been a blip in the system. I was pressing the 'back' button quite a bit!

TPE don't normally pass through Strines so I don't see how this could be valid on their services anyway (except the odd one overnight).

I meant the Traincard could be used in 1st at the weekend on TPE anywhere in Greater Manchester area.

Customers holding a valid one month or longer Season Ticket may make their normal daily journey in First Class at weekends at no extra cost on First TransPennine Express services.

The Traincard is a PTE product though so is specifically excluded from the TPE weekend offer.

From TPE website:

Customers holding a valid one month or longer Season Ticket may make their normal daily journey in First Class at weekends at no extra cost on First TransPennine Express services. Passenger Transport Executive (PTE) season tickets, for example, MetroCards, do not qualify for the weekend first class upgrade.

Brian - have you got a YP railcard?
If you do you can get advances on TPE with the 50% discount for £3-£5 - I was commuting on advances for the last 3 months and typically it cost about £45 per week. Even if you book the advances 4 days a week and buy a day return/open return for the other day it's still cheaper.
I've moved to Manchester now so no longer a problem for me!

But you'd be tied to the Northern stopper, you wouldn't be able to get the EMT or TPE fast trains. I suppose a Grindleford to Manchester season plus Sheffield to Grindleford day tickets would work on the fast trains, but I don't think that'd save you any money compared to the through season.
