I am wanting to travel Bromborough Rake to Southport via Chester on a Sunday, I am curious to know if a guard would question my intentions going via Chester. and yes I know there is a direct service to Southport from Chester in the current timetable.

If you have a Bromborough Rake - Southport ticket, you're not permitted to travel via Chester.

Your origin and destination share a same routeing point in the shape of Liverpool Group, hence the only permitted routes are on a direct service or the shortest route (and those no more than 3 miles longer). AFAIK you are only allowed to travel via Birkenhead and Liverpool.

Welcome to the forum! :)

It depends on the guard, but I could certainly see some questioning that!

Permitted routes are defined in the Routeing Guide.

Unfortunately Bromborough Rake [[stn]BMR[/stn]] and Southport [[stn]SOP[/stn]] share a 'Routeing Point' in common (Liverpool Group), therefore the only permitted route is the direct route via Birkenhead, Liverpool and Formby. Sorry!

Would a Saveaway ticket not be valid?

• Saveaways can be used on:
- most local bus and rail services in Merseyside and beyond the Merseyside
boundary, by rail only, to Chester
, Ellesmere Port and Ormskirk (you must
have an All Zones ticket to travel to stations outside Merseyside).

You would be travelling by rail only between two stations in the Merseyside area.

Depends on what the itinerary the OP had in mind. If he intends to travel to Chester then back via Merseyrail to Southport then a Saveaway is probably the correct ticket.

I fear that the OP had in mind the idea of going via Wigan and Warrington, in which case a Saveaway is not valid.

I think he had in mind the idea of going via Northwich, Manchester, Bolton and Wigan (which is a direct service on a Sunday).

If it is a direct service between Bromborough and Southport then it is valid on a point-to-point ticket, however I don't believe that he can alight at Chester.

It's direct between Southport and Chester (a Northern 150 IIRC).

Pretty certain it's invalid on a Bromborough ticket.

Correct. Two tickets would be required for that journey, one from Southport to Chester and another from Chester to Bromborough Rake.

There seems to be a word or two missing from that question, so I'm not certain exactly what you're asking. I'll pre-empt some possibilities though.

A Chester to Southport ticket would be valid both via Liverpool and on any direct train. If it's a return then you can go one way out and back the other. You cannot use part of the return ticket before then using the outward as the outward ticket is only valid if you have an unused return portion. You couldn't therefore do the circle from Bromborough Rake on a Chester to Southport return.

I would be getting a one way ticket from Chester to Southport then using the saveaway back to Bromborough as I'll be getting an all zones one to get to chester on the first leg of the journey

That's perfectly valid for your itinerary, then.

You only need a Chester to Meols Cop ticket as the Saveaway is valid from there to Southport according to the map.

True but this is exactly the same price as a Southport to Chester ticket!
