I'm planning a 'see the sights' day visit to central London and intend using the Chalfont and Latimer underground station as my starting point. I'll be setting off at about 10am. Anyone know the best/cheapest tickets for 3 adults and a 3-year old and where they can be purchased?

Chalfont and Latimer is in Zone 8, and Central London would be assumed to be meaning zone 1. You should buy a Zone 1 to 8 travelcard covering all National Rail*, London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, London Buses, London Tramlink within Zone 1-8. It gives you 1/3'rd off travelling on TfL River services as well.

Travelling Off-Peak (from 09:30 Monday to Friday, all day Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays) this will cost £11.00 per adult, your three year old won't need to pay.

If a child is with someone who has a valid ticket, is using Oyster to pay as they go, has a Freedom Pass or has a Veterans Oyster photocard the child gets free travel on buses, Tube, trams, DLR, London Overground and National Rail.
* Not valid on Heathrow Connect between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow and not valid at all on Heathrow Express.

If you are able to get a pay as you go Oyster card, this will be cheaper than a travel card. Ticket office should be open about 9:30 or you can buy in advance on line

Would a Great Missenden - London Zones 1-6 Off Peak Day Travelcard be valid for starting at Chalfont & Latimer? It's £25.40 for all of you using Groupsave. Arrival in London must be after 10am on weekdays but this should be no problem. No evening peak restrictions.

ODT - OFF-PEAK TCDSTD NCH
00264 - CHALFONT & LATMR
Non-standard discounts apply
3 Adults @£ 8.40 = £ 25.20
__________
£ 25.20

Standard Class Single

£25.20, not .40 ;)

Break of Jrny: (OUT) YES

Break of Journey on outbound portion is permitted so you should be fine to start at Chalfont and Latimer.

The other option as Metroman62 says is oyster;

The card will cost £5 deposit plus your top-up. You will be able to travel as much as you want, and as long as you touch in on the yellow reader at the start and end of your journey you will not be charged any more than you would have paid for the equivalent travelcard. Oyster is usually about 50% (or more cheaper).

For example if you made a journey from a zone one to zone one station on a single paper ticket, it'd cost £4.00, but only £1.90 on oyster. Find out more at www.tfl.gov.uk/oyster
