Hi guys
I'm planning on doing a WMDR on Saturday 19th November. Can anyone tell me if the attached plan is reasonable for me to do (I'm a pretty fast walker usually), and if so, what classes of train I'm likely to find on it.
If its unreasonable, can you please tell me what the problem with it is, and if possible, an alternative way for it.
Thanks
Dan :D

EDIT: Forgot to mention that its starting at Crewe, but that shouldn't make much of a difference

You may need to get a spurt on between Moor St and New St for your LTV train, 9 mins is ever so slightly too fine platform to platform.

The rest looks fine though :D

It looks feasible however, I am going to bring up an issue

IIRC, you can't use the WMDR between Coventry and Leamington Spa, you can use it from Moor Street but not Coventry I don't think

It's easily doable, I am eighteen and a half stone and can do it in just under five minutes from station to station and, without seeing gnofile, if he is lighter than I am, he can do it quicker

Allowing for late running, traffic lights, ticket gates...

West Midland Day Ranger is valid from Coventry - Leamington Spa via XC.

I'm using http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/managed/promotions/pr9cb0cc0a040004006ad8690e40c16f/areaMap/West_Midlands_Ranger.pdf as a guide to where its valid, and that suggests that Coventry -> Leamington is valid
As for Moor Street -> New Street, the train I change onto at Lichfield City, calls at Birmingam New St 10 mins after the one I'm planning on catching from New St - I'm trying to get as many stations as possible as the reason for the changing services at Lichfield City

Yeah, I've used WMDR between Coventry and Leamington Spa a few times before so you should be fine...at the end of the day it makes no sense as to why it wouldn't be valid

Not sure about the rest of the plan as using app at the moment so will have a look when on the laptop :)

I've also used a WMDR between Leamington Spa and Coventry and not had any issues.

Shame that Shrewsbury-Crewe isn't on it really.

Alright, thanks all for confirming that my plan is somewhat realistic.

What classess am I likely to be seeing while I'm there?

This is just of the top of my head, one or two might be wrong, I just worked down your plan
  1. Virgin Voyager
  2. ATW 175 or 158 (Think it's more likely a 175)
  3. LM 170/323 (Not sure what goes up to Shrewsbury)
  4. LM 172
  5. LM 139
  6. LM 139
  7. LM 172
  8. LM 170
  9. XC 220/221
  10. LM 350
  11. LM 153
  12. LM 350
  13. XC 220/221
  14. CT 165/168
  15. LM 170 (Not sure about New St - Lichfield)
  16. LM 350/323

I have just had a look at the plan and generally it looks OK.

If you can move quick the 9 mins from Moor Street to New Street should be fine (afterall, you and bb21 made the cross Pontefract connection at the WY challenge! :))

The Droitwich Spa could be dodgy if the train is running at all late - but it is only a cross bridge connection (make sure you are at the back of the inbound service to be closer to the bridge :))

Another note on that - if you make the PPM move you have planned, when you get back, there is an xx:02 service as far as Kidderminster I believe (pretty sure we used it) which turns round and returns - it all depends what you are after.

As for traction:
1. Probably VT 221, though there is a chance of a Pendo (see frequently requested diagrams thread)
2. Almost certain a 158 - not sure if 175's run up the line to Telford (happy to be corrected though)
3. 170 (not electrified beyond the VT depot in the Shrewsbury direction so no chance of much else)
4, 5, 6 and 7 - as above (unless you get really lucky and a lone 150 turns up on 4 and 7)
8. As above
9. May be a 170 - not sure if Voyagers run the Nottingham - Cardiff route
10 and 11 - as above
12. Could be a 323 or 350
13. As above
14. As above unless it is a loco hauled
15 and 16 - LM 323 on the X-City (some terminate "short" at Lichfield City)
17. LM 350

Also - be prepared for last minute changes on the day - I've rarely had a day on a WMDR/Great Escape go completely to plan!

And it nearly killed us :D

Oh, and another thing

How far ahead can I buy my ticket? (Ideally, I'd like to have chance to make seat reservations for any trains possible)

Not sure there are any limits...I've bought mine a day before and in Yorkshire so you should be OK

God I hope he is not 18 and half stone, otherwise we all have no chance.

No, it didn't. I was fit as a fiddle. ;)

You'll only get reservations on possibly 1, 2, 9 and 13. Not really worth it I reckon.

Indeed... and to say that the non validity on XC isn't publicised very well is an understatement!

It is better since I complained here about it previously.

Re classes, agree with above mostly - train 2 will be a 158, 9 will be a 170, 12 and 17 will be a 350.
