Good morning,

Does anyone know the mileage from Leeds to Carlisle via the S&C and also from Preston to Carlisle via Clitheroe, Hellifield, S&C and back from Carlisle to Preston via Shap. I Am trying to work out what is better value for money steam haulage-wise so I can choose the better routing of two possible Diesel & Steam railtours from London in the New Year. Tks.

I would choose the Preston via Hellifield to Carlisle and return Via Shap rather than Via Leeds

Yes, I agree with you, that does give more miles by steam traction and although both routes are good, the circular route via Hellifield and Shap is perhaps a little more unusal and maybe more scenic too. (It's also GBP 20.00 approx cheaper.)

Rgds Steve.
