Going to visit my daughter at St Andrews University on Friday from my home in Falkirk. Just a day trip.

Fare with railcard Falkirk to St Andrews Bus (SAO) £23.00 period return.

Fare with railcard Falkirk to Leuchars (where the bus goes from) £12.20 period return.

The bus fare return from Leuchars to St Andrews is less than £5 for a return.

What the heck is going on :p

Fares Manual said:
St. Andrews

Interchange station: Leuchars

Fares

Through prices may be calculated using the add-on amounts to the fares to LEUCHARS shown in your TIS or the Fares Finder.

Add-on amounts

£2.50 - Single
£4.50 - Return

£23.50 - Flexipass

£19.00 - Weekly Season

£73.00 - Monthly Season

£208.00 - 3-Month Season

£780.00 - Annual Season

Fares are also available in the reverse direction.
Discounts

Children travel at the normal discount of 50% (child aged 5-15). No child discount on Flexipass

Railcard discount fares do not apply on bus-link services. Holders of Railcards should be issued with a discounted ticket to Leuchars and purchase a separate ticket for the coach service.

Privilege and Inter-Rail discount fares do not apply on bus-link services. Holders of Privilege and InterRail Cards should be issued with a discounted ticket to Leuchars and purchase a separate ticket for the coach service.
Ticketing

Destination name & NLC: St Andrews Bus K208
Refunds

Normal arrangements apply.
Services

Link operator/route: Stagecoach East Scotland, Moffat & Williamson
Accompanied animals and articles

Hand luggage and small animals only can, at the discretion of the driver, be carried on these services.

Public information

Customers may obtain further details of the bus service by calling ’traveline’ 0871 200 22 33 or visiting www.traveline.info.

The fare quoted which includes train and bus will be the undiscounted fare to Leuchars (£18.50) plus the bus fare (£4.50), as there is no discount on the through fare for railcard holders.

You would need to buy two tickets Falkirk to Leuchars discounted with the railcard and Leuchars to St Andrews Bus, which would not be discounted.

If you have a daughter and a railcard would it be a fair assumption you are 60+ - in which case (noting your start station) wouldn't the bus be covered by your Scottish concessionary pass?

Nice sentiment but I'm not that old

I am a mature student hence the ridiculously (in my case) named 16-25 Railcard :p

Apologies. In that case, compare the fair from railway ticket office with the fare you would pay on the bus as a normal bus passenger. Don't suppose plusbus covers part of this bus route?

More details here.

It gives the number of the two operators, although the price advertised seems to be out-of-date.

I'm sure it's £4.90 return or somehere thereabouts on the bus with no reduction.

To be fair in the article above it does say to purchase the tickets seperately which is the cheapest option. ie Rail Ticket with card and directly on the bus.

Plusbus is not available at Leuchars.

The guard on the Leuchars train can sell you the bus ticket. £4.50 return. Just tell him to input LEU to SAO into his AVANTIX machine and the fares will appear.
