Some people really are daft.

On the train today the trolley came round - "Would you like any fruit?"

"Oh no thanks - I don't like fruit. Do you have a banana?"

Facepalm.

I know this gets done fairly regularly, but it's only because there's no shortage of new material.

Fire away!

Last week I genuinely heard someone on the train say something along the lines of:

wouldn't it be great if you could get 3D glasses you could wear all the time, then you'd be able to see everything in 3D

I think a little part of me just died.....

Someone asked me the other day what concrete was. Now that doesnt sound bad, but he is a fellow second year student in civil engineering and we have had 4 lectures a week on concrete for the last 7 weeks....

I had a 3rd year E&EE student as in E&EE That have done 3 units on power systems and power electronics, who genuinely didn't know what a power factor was or how to calculate it, I, a Mechatonics Student who doesn't in any way specialist in power systems had to explain it to them.

I have loads of these, but thats the only one I can think of at the moment.

My 16 year old sister asked me what day is Christmas Day! She didn't know it was the 25th December, I thought it was a joke, but she was actually being serious!

I heard this one the other day:

Phone call to a hotel:

Customer: "Have you got a gym?"
Staff: "Err, I don't know, please hold while I go and check"
"Hello? We don't have a Jim but we have a Julie!"

Comical!

I know a painfully large number of people, both at Uni and elsewhere, who genuinely have no idea where Leeds is

Back in the 'sixties, we used to use car batteries to power equipment for trials by the trackside.

One day this chap came in complaining that he couldn't get any power out of one of them. He pointed out that it still read 7 volts on his Avo meter.

I had to explain to a bloke who had got two degrees, because one was too easy, all about internal impedance.

Middle aged woman picks up an item in Poundland, then proceeds to ask the passing assistant how much it is. Actually, I have seen that more than once.

Me: How do I get to the station?
P : Turn left
M : *turns left*
P : No, the other left

Not so stupid given how much in Poundland or the 99p shop doesn't actually cost £1 or 99p respectively. In the past few months I have seen 3 for £2 in Poundland or 40p each/3 for 99p in the 99p store.

People always used to ask me at school (in Manchester) if Glasgow was in Ireland
I was always convinced they were just joking...

Aha, Thats in my notes somewhere, True Power/Apparent power isnt it? which using trig you can express as Cos(theta)

Ideally you want it to be as close to 1 as possible, and can use capacitor or inductor banks to make theta = 0 (Ie no phase change)

Is this used any way in rolling stock power systems?

I have had a few items in pound shops that arent a quid (usually things that will obviously cost more than that)

I know it's a cliché, but if I had a penny for every time someone asked me if you needed a passport to travel between England and Scotland...! (I've had one person ask that question having done so only three months earlier!)

Whereas it's actually near Bath, as any fool knows.

I'll give you that ;)

I was about to post on here for a different reason, but then I saw that! Anyway, some git is playing that "Do they know..." Christmas song nearby. It's 40 days away yet! Turn it off!!!!! <(

EDIT: Actually, I think it might have just been on the radio somewhere. That's even worse

In case you can't guess, for charity or not, I do not like that song!

I used to work in a pub. Occasionally, if the cook was off sick, I would have to write on two big sheets of paper "Sorry, No Food Today" together with the date.

I would stick one on the gate on the path from the car park to the pub, and one on the pub door.

I would then watch car after car enter the car park, the people open the gate, walk through the beer garden, stop at the door, look at the second poster they'd come across, open the door and say:

"Are you doing food today?"

I'm not actually that surprised by it, given how many people fly these days and how Ryanair insists on seeing your passport even if you're only flying domestic.

... if the cook was off sick ...

Had a silly moment and read this one completely wrong.

Do they insist on a Passport these days. They used to accept Driving Licences and other Guv'mint issued ID on internal flights

Passport or EU government Identity Card only for Ryanair. No driving license. However, they don't have any UK domestic flights anymore.

easyJet accept the following for domestic flights:
A valid passport - an expired passport can be used up to a maximum of two years after expiry
Valid photographic EU or Swiss national identity card
Valid photographic driving licence
Valid armed forces identity card
Valid police warrant card/badge
Valid airport employees security identity pass
A child on parent' s passport is an acceptable form of ID
CitizenCard
Valid photographic firearm certificate
Valid Government-issued identity card
SMART card - (what is this???)
Electoral identity card

No passport needed for Wales and Scotland (yet!). Although, this is a question that people keep asking, which to me shows a lack of understanding about the country.
