Hi All. Long shot this one but I'm sure someone will know (eg. Northern Guard!). This train (original from Preston) is a limited stop service from Piccadilly. Stops at Stockport then straight to Hazel Grove etc. Every few days Northern seem to add in additional stops at Woodsmoor and Davenport (LDB are also changed to reflect this!) but i don't understand why. There is already a 17:23 from Manchester-Hazel Grove that stops at these stations so I'd like to know the reasoning for occasionally making the Buxton train stop there too

Seeing as it is the evening peak, I'd hazard a guess that the 17.23 fills up with people going to Heaton Chapel/Stockport, so the extra stops on the 17.23 to Buxton may allow more people to get on for Woodsmoor/Davenport.

Checking the system, looks as if the 17.23 to Buxton stopped at both DVN and WSR today as well.

I don't know the exact details but we're contractually bound with TfGM to provide a service at those stops for a minimum amount of times per week. Don't know the figures though

Both the 17.23 (from Piccadilly) Preston to Buxton and the 17.23 Manchester Picc to Hazel Grove are booked to be 4 coaches, However when there are unit shortages (which happens regularly) the 17.23 Man Picc to Hazel Grove is one of the first to lose 2 coaches. If this is 2 car and the Buxton train is 4 car then the Buxton train is given a stop order for Davenport and Woodsmoor to reduce overcrowding on the 2 car Manchester Picc to Hazel Grove (which frequently has to leave passengers behind when short formed).
