From BBC News -

A train has collided with a car on a level crossing in Oxfordshire.

The silver Volkswagen Polo was hit by the First Great Western Henley to Twyford service at 18:26 GMT near Shiplake.

A spokesman from the train operator said he understood that all passengers and the train driver were evacuated.

The driver of the car was injured and taken to hospital. Trains on the line have been suspended with a replacement bus service in operation.

The car was 10ft (3m) from the train tracks as emergency services attended the scene.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said: "The train has remained upright and passengers onboard have been transferred to alternative methods of transport.

"Officers are currently investigating the circumstances, speaking to witnesses and are appealing for anyone with information to contact police."

BTP were highlighting the dangers of driving near Shiplake level crossing on 7 November, after a woman was reported for dangerous driving there.

A train had to make an emergency stop to avoid hitting her car.

What sort of crossing is this, AHB or ungated? Saw an item about this on last night's news, but couldn't see the crossing very well. Thankful this wasn't another major accident, let's hope stiff prosecution follows.

Hang on, you don't even know why the car was on the crossing yet, it might have broken down, the driver might have had an heart attack or been taken i'll, the lights might have been faulty...... Jesus, how can you talk about prosecuting the bloke before you know the facts!

It is a AOCL - Open Crossing - road warning lights monitored by train crew

Ah, you're right of course, we should really wait for some reports etc etc. But in the meantime, I'll eat my flags if it wasn't motorist error/negligence

The car doesn't appear to be 3m from the tracks- and given the location, not would I expect it to be. Possibly 3m from the road. I'd make an assumption that the train was travelling pretty slowly, as it'll have been stopping at the station? Looks like the car's basically been shoved (with some force- even at low speed, a 165 has a fair bit of momentum in it) out of the way. Low speed plus relatively light car will be why the train's pretty much OK.

Slightly OT, but I saw someone caught by the red light cameras at my local AHB crossing last night. They were a bit unluckly, I suppose, as they were just too quick in moving off when the barriers started to rise after the train passed. Flash, flash!
