which would make the best telly? which toc would be best?

would it be fcc with their london services and agressive rpi team or scotrail with remote and city stations and services (plus the sleepers). what would be worth watching?

Since people on telly don't have long enough concentration spans to watch anything for longer than a few minutes the only way to do it would be to have a TOC with quite a variety of routes, so that you can intersperse three stories throught an episode (since we can't just watch one thing at a time), and watch the different tales develop.

In that case the way to do it would be to have a TOC which has a wide variety of services (FGW/ ATW/ Northern/ Scotrail), so you'd get two minutes about a commuter problem then two minutes about a story at a rural location, followed by...

(that kind of thing)

It would largely depend on the TV crew's agenda. Do they want to show that the trains don't work or do they want to show a fair representation? If it's the former they'll pick a TOC with lots of delays and angry passengers but if it's the latter they'll pick a more respected TOC.

It would have to be a TOC that goes to London IMO so commuters can moan about high ticket prices and overcrowding and, if there's time, moaning about engineering work and delays (ignorant of the fact both are Network Rail's domain of course) and of course a TV show isn't a tv show if London isn't the focus :p

All depends on the programme, I guess.

In my mind I was thinking of one of those "traffic cops" shows, where they follow the police around and show the kind of things that they deal with.

Whereas, I was thinking of an "Airline" style where the public moan despite it being their own fault. What I was also trying to get at in my original post is that the producer could pick either of these depending on which image of the railway they wanted to show.

actually a show about the btp would be fascinating. i've always wondered about how they deal with the issue of few officers and a massive network. meaning - there's a problem on a train and the nearest officer is 60 minutes away by car. so what happens and how are things prioritised?

There's been one, and incidents are triaged and dispatched in exactly the same way as other emergency services.

I remember a show about the BTP a few years ago, it was called Rail cops, or something similar.

If we had to pick a franchise for this, the ones that spring immediately to my mind are Northern (for the variety and the large operating area) or First Great Western for similar reasons. I'd also love to see them try and film on a Pacer

There was a series a few years ago about buses in London, I think it featured London General and followed the working lives of staff. So buses, trucks and planes have been done - I'd love them to try trains, just for something new to watch.

I could seriously see Five doing this actually, they seem to have done various other bizarre "fly on the walls".

I think EMT would be good, with their Intercity routes, (MML) quiet lines (lincoln) and also some 'special' services they do (lincoln market, skegness specials)

Maybe they could play a HST off against a Meridian?

I believe Network Rail were once approached about a TV documentary on New Street Station. AFAIK it was flat out turned down by all TOCs.
You can just imagine the way the Railway would be portrayed in something like this

There is a new one of London Underground in Spring 2012, called The Tube but this time on the BBC.
They were filming in our control centre a month or so back.
I would quite like it to be one of those semi scripted The Only Way Is Essex type ones though!
