Anyone know why the 319s are in a shocking state externally?

They are covered in filth and often have graffiti or window etching problems with the graffiti only partially removed.

Some of the Southern liveried units are especially grim. Windows are barely see through.

Is this due to the engineering blockades affecting the cleaning schedule combined with placing them in sidings next to trouble spots?

They might be better inside but externally they are a throw back to the days when grim trains covered in filth and graffiti plagued the south east.

They keep getting hit while berthed south of the river, especially on Southeastern patch. The time to remove it all and reliver each carriage means that only the worst gets removed.

That doesn't answer the question on why they are so dirty. Compare a Southern liveried 319 to a Southern 455. The latter is white, not brown!

Same reason, they berth away from somewhere to clean the units a lot of the time. Fact is only Cricklewood and Bedford can clean the units but they don't always get the regular chance to go through because of diagrams. I'm sure if you look a 455 stays on home turf all the time and there receives more attention from company staff than being stabled away from your TOC means they can't get the same level of attention.

Because southern have a cleaning shed at selhurst, where people with brushes and soap manually clean the units on top of going through wash plants, FCC do not have this we only have wash plants.

The stock gets rotated, so it shouldn't be that dirty. And no handbashing is still no excuse to be dirty. Do these southern liveried 319s do a different rotation to the others? Because if not then they should be cleaned regularly. Are you sure it's not that the old livery has just got tatty and ingrained?

FCC doesn't have enough spare units to make sure it has every unit sparking. They would rather ensure that they operate their booked services rather than short form units. It isn't a safety issue so no reason why hey can't run dirty.

I'd also wonder how many miles the 455 do compared to the 319's daily.

The 319's aren't exactly clean inside either - that and the most uncomfortable seats of virtually any train (OK probably bar Pacers before I get roasted)

Why can't FCC invest more effort into their stock like Southern does. I guess because the 319's are going to be replaced in 5 or 6 years

Thameslink units really are the odd one out in the First stable.

FTPx, FSR, FHT, FCC (GN) & especially FGW stand out as very clean trains externally.

Relly? I use the 319/3 mainly into work and personally find them clean inside.

Maybe your jounery is on units that tend to be stabled on the south side so don't get the clean would if stabled on the north side?

Pacers are comfy, so long as you have the original seating, nice and padded and if it's quiet you can lay out and go to sleep...

Why is it that the 319/2s are still in Southern livery? The seats inside, which were installed by Southern and have the increased comfort/armrests/tables over the other units, now have FCC seat covers and purple poles and all the rest of it, and as far as I can tell are exclusively leased to FCC - so why are they all still in Southern colours on the outside? Especially when the southern green clashes horribly with the purple of the FCC logo :p

Under the original plan the units would have started to be taken out and replaced come 18 months time. As the original programme time frame has been pushed back so far the units will continue to run around as now as FCC franchise will be ending in 18 months. The next franchise holder will likely not touch the units much other than basic branding as its not worth the effort when they are planned for major refurbishment.

The 319/2s have the best seating. The 319/0s have an interior largely unchanged since built.

They were all set to recieve advertising livery not sure if this going ahead as only one unit was treated about a year ago now

They are something of a "Cinderella" stock....................... but maybe that's why I quite like them. Variety is the spice of life, and for the 319 fleet there's quite a variety of liveries running: FCC, Southern, Thameslink Transformation pink stripy effort, Visit Switzerland etc.

But I do agree that the Southern colours tend to show dirt.

I suspect you are right. I've had various dirty seats since I've started travelling again and hence that is my perception. 319/3 aren't that common on my route either as it tends to be /4's and /2's. If I am correct don't the /3's mostly work the Wimbledon Loop as they have no first class, so where do they stable at night?

The 319/3's tend to breth in Cricklewood if my memory serves me right where they run through the wash every time they enter and exit.

The units with first class tend to be berthed else where (like Bedford) and don't go through the wash regularly.

One of the problems at the moment seems to be that the carriage wash is not getting to the doors properly - especially the windows as are getting dirtier and dirtier as the weeks pass.
