I've noticed tonight that the stand doors at Gateshead Interchange are now 'locked down' and won't open unless there's a bus at the stand. I'm sure there is a safety reason behind this I.e. to prevent passengers from standing on the kerb but surely this creates more problems than it's worth? I.e an influx of passengers rushing through the door when a bus arrives and also in the event of an evacuation if there's a fire etc.

What was the reason behind this does anyone from up here know?

It seems reasonably sensible, i'd have thought; i suppose it's to prevent swarms of people thronging about among moving Buses, which i thought was the idea behind them in the first place. Surely there's fire exits as well, or the Doors can be opened in an emergency?

In fairness there are emergency exits at the bottom end of the station next to the old Jackson St entrance to the Metro.

The doors are likely to be linked to the fire system. In the event of a alarm the doors should all open on there own. Nexus must have reviewed this possibly due to increased reports of near misses in the station.

Expect this kind of thing to happen more often - AIUI a pension was killed at Glenrothes bus station recently, after walking onto the "bus" side.

These stand doors aren't always pretty, but the operators of bus stations obviously are going to be a little worried about the cost of any accidents.

I'd guess this is to stop people zig zagging between buses during rush hours and out into the roads but i've been there at 5pm when its survival of the most ignorant and that was standing outside so I don't know why they'd 'lock' these people in just to provoke them more!

Mind you most of the people in Gateshead bus station need locking up, never mind in! My friend saw a GIRL squatting down INSIDE the terminus relieving herself after a hard days work watching Jeremy Kyle or the likes just two days ago....disgusting!

Your post is a tad bit on the offensive side. There may be idiots knocking about but that doesn't mean MOST people need locking up.

Sorry if my post offended anyone and I'm far from a snob to be fair, it's not a representation of the great people of Newcastle/Gateshead in general as many good and decent pass through the concourse...

...I am talking about the screggs of humanity that are magnetised to this bright and airy building just because they have nothing better to do than sit about causing nothing but an eyesore and trouble for the staff of nexus!

After 8pm its like something out of a zombie film! FACT!

Glenrothes Bus Station has a terminal building, then a line of stances with bus shelters at each one

I'd be very surprised if the doors are linked to the fire alarms to open in an emergency as one of the worst things you can do in an evacuation is have people evacuating into a dangerous area. As long as the building has sufficient fire exits then it doesn't matter. A building the size of a normal bus station would only need a few exits anyway.

Actually a big risk when it comes to evacuations can be people going through or gathering in dangerous areas, or standing in places that block emergency vehicles. There have been cases where people have survived an evacuation (including many cases where there was little or not risk from whatever lead to the evacuation), yet been killed because of where they went after evacuation. I actually saw a situation once where a building was evacuated and some people were standing on a road (an internal road on the site) and were nearly hit by a fire engine which was responding. Lead to a change in assembly point, evacuation routes and training for fire marshalls to prevent it happening again.

Yes, but the danger of passenger walking into the path of a bus is a risk at any such place. I've seen passengers walk over the tarmac at various designs of bus station, often as a "shortcut".

Well, there's a thing. Gateshead Bus Station is MASSIVE. Not in terms of stands but in terms of the sheer scale of it. It's an 'interesting' place to try and navigate if you're new to it or don't know where a particular stand is.

You think gateshead is massive. You ever been to the Frenchgate bus terminal in doncaster that is some size.

I think Gateshead is bigger than Donny. Perhaps because it's underground it doesn't seem so big.

As for the closing of the doors, my other halfs mother has been told it is to stop people waiting on the bus side, jumping in front of others who are inside queing, and also to stop people going outside for a smoke.
