Hi there! Just wanting to know how safe the cycle-parking bays are like in Glasgow Central? What kind of system do they use? Would you put a cycle there?

Thanks!

Thanks for that. Anybody know how to use those kind of racks? I get confused when I spot one of them.

They're easy enough, by which I mean that their operation is apparent by looking at them, though there are a couple of mistakes worth avoiding!

If using the upper level, then the bike-carrier pulls forward and then the front (with the red handle) drops down. Its balanced so doesn't suddenly fall. Simply push the bike forward and attach your lock. You'll see there's a 'U' hoop which is hinged and holds the wheel, if you forgget to use this then your bike will only be held in place by your lock.
To finish, lift the bike-carrier up again to the horizontal by the red handle and push it back so that iits berthed in line with the others.

Using the lower level is easier because its just roll-on - roll-off without having to move the bike-carrier, but while bending down to attach/release the lock, you do run the risk of banging your head agaist the hard steel of the rack above!

There's usually plenty other people around to help you if you get stuck.

Its worth getting used to these racks as they appear to be coming more common across the UK and I guess their introduction is likely to continue.

Thanks for all your help guys. I assume no charge has to be paid to use the service? Anybody parked their bike there? Thanks a lot!

a little off topic but i like the whole idea of putting cycle parking at train stations as it opens the idea of cycling to work to the public.

They've been about a bit, and hundreds of stations have them :)

I suppose the only limitations are the capacity to carry them on trains...

Including some of the most remote and underused stations like Altnabreac, Berney Arms (so I'm told), etc. At some of these, cycle racks merely seem to be part of the standard fittings, rather than designed for any useful purposes. Anyone who brings a bike is surely about to use it, rather than park it.

I may be moving rather away from the intended subject here... ;)

Used the cycle-parking today. Locked the bike up. Took a short hop to Crossmyloof to see if it wouldn't get knicked if I left it for 30 mins. It was still there when I got back. Very easy to use. Thanks for all your advice!
