Morning peeps

In the December 2011 edition of Railways Illustrated, on page 39 there's a picture of 47765 'Intercity' in a very worn RES livery, with a couple of lines saying that's it's going into the workshops over the winter for bodywork repairs and a repaint into ScotRail livery with a blue stripe.

Does anyone know why ScotRail are having this loco?

I'm pretty sure it means that its owners are having it repainted in Scotrail livery (as illustrated), and not that FSR are acquiring it, interesting as that would be.

Odd choice of livery, as only 47461 and 47701-47717 carried the original ScotRail livery, a deriviative of InterCity Executive. Even more odd, as the only time this loco was allocated to Scotland was March '75 to August '76 when it was based at Eastfield. If it had been one of the 47/4s that carried InterCity Executive livery but with ScotRail branding I could have understood it. So what's the thinking behind this repaint?

Will they have to licence the livery & logo from Transport Scotland?

I'd like to see a 2X, 37 or 47 with the new saltire livery.

Better still, a 101.

I wonder why it's been named "Intercity", albeit not on "proper" nameplates? It was "Ressaldar" as a 47/7 in RES days.

Is the loco going to return to it's previous identity of 47631 after its' repaint into Scotrail livery? It would be odd to see it in that livery while still numbered as a Railnet 47/7.

I believe 47765 (according to what ive been told on WNXX) has only ever carried two tone green, BR blue, Large Logo blue and RES during its lifetime, the owner already has locos painted in these colours except RES and that livery hes not very fond of, so as he likes Scotrail livery thats the colour its going, i don't see the point in painting locos in non-authentic liveries to be honest.

Also seems an odd choice being as im led to believe that 47715 is going into the same livery, personnally Id repaint it in RES as this livery is yet to be represented in preserved circles, and given the amount of 47/7's still about it seems odd not to have one painted this colour.

But as the old saying goes..... Its his loco, he can paint it as he wishes

Well, I'm happy to post my support for the SR repaint! It's a shame that some scoff at the thought of anything that is non-authentic, I see no problem with a little 'artistic licence' if it helps to revive long-lost history.

We could just paint everything the same colour, I suppose...

Hmm, a loco can be painted in any colour tbh the 'it never carried that colour so should not be painted in it' school of thought to me, personally is pretty narrow minded. Paint is temporary, at some point it will need more and if you want to be pedantic then even if painted in the correct colour it is not 'authentic' as BR didn't paint it and use the actual paint that was used when they did paint the locos......if that makes sense lol :)

The thing with 47s is, almost invariably t/t green or BR Blue seems to be chosen, and 47s have carried so many liveries in their time that I expect every single preserved one could have a different one and they'd still not all be represented. So really any owner is spoiled for choice. It doesn't really matter to me whether or not that particular loco carried it, just as long as it is accurate for the class. I'd like one in GW150 green; perhaps 47484 might be eventually, if anyone does ever get round to that. Shame that WCR didn't paint 47500 that instead of muddy brown. :(
Or how about Virgin livery? That rather suited them, I thought, and as Virgin don't use it any more there shoudn't be copyright infringement issues.

None authentic liveries tend to be used for two reasons that are hard to argue against. Either some did carry that livery but none that actually did have survived, or where none of the owners have chosen to use that livery on theirs despite them carrying it, so someone who owns one that never did carry it uses the livery.
The one I tend to object to is when something is painted into a none authentic livery when there are loads that are authetically in that livery. That's usually ignorance more than anything. Classic bus one is "it's a Routemaster, it should be Red" (or even "it's an open platform double decker, it should be red). It's especially annoying when something is painted into an unauthentic but common livery instead of a rare livery it actually carried.
The other one that gets annoying is when someone's idea of restoring something to "original condition" is to get the livery spot on as it would have looked when it was first delivered, but don't seem to care about all the very ovious changes that have been made since then.
