If I purchase a Cheltenham to Birmingham Stations return, is it valid for me to travel up using FGW and LM via Worcester to Snow Hill and return using XC from New Street straight down the main line.

It's routing map CE, but I don't know how to interpret the maps, so just hold tight until someone else comes along.

Yes that's correct :)

You may go :

Cheltenham - Birmingham N Street Direct

Cheltenham - Worcester - Bromsgrove - Birmingham N Street

Cheltenham - Worcester - Stourbridge - Smethwick Galton Bridge - Birmingham N Street

or Smethwick Galton Bridge - Jewlery Quarter - Birmingham Snow Hill/Moor Street

Vice Versa if coming back from Birmingham

Thank you for your replies, the reason I asked was because I put Cheltenham to Birmingham via Worcester into the FGW website and it came back "no tickets available for this journey".

A booking engine

http://www.londonmidland.com/ is an example of webtis site
Thank you for that information SS4.
I have tried inputting the details on the LM website but it still does not give me the answer to my question.
I have put in Cheltenham to Birmingham Stations via Shrub Hill and it keeps giving me trains from Foregate Street most of which appear to go into New Street.
For example I would like to use the 9.48 from Cheltenham to Shrub Hill and then the 10.47 from Shrub Hill to Snow hill but this is not shown.
Also all returns are via Worcester so it does not reassure me that a direct train from New Street to Cheltenham is valid on this ticket.

The question was answered in this thread.

That's not surprising, it's doing what you are asking it to do. Cheltenham to Birmingham Stations via Worcester Shrub Hill will indeed give you Cheltenham to Worcester Shrub Hill to Foregate St to New St.
For example I would like to use the 9.48 from Cheltenham to Shrub Hill and then the 10.47 from Shrub Hill to Snow hill but this is not shown.
You can use it, it doesn't need to be shown. I am unsure what the benefit of trying to get this train to be shown is, as it's not reserveable?
Also all returns are via Worcester so it does not reassure me that a direct train from New Street to Cheltenham is valid on this ticket.
The Routeing Guide defines permitted routes, we have looked it up for you, or you can look it up yourself on the ATOC website. It is a permitted route.

If you want WebTIS to show it, specify [stn]CNM[/stn] to [stn]BMO[/stn] via [stn]KID[/stn].

If you just specify via Worcester, it will show you the quickest route via Worcester, which is via Barnt Green.

And to add, if this is a day trip then it'll be cheaper to split your tickets at Worcester than purchasing a through fare.

I understand that it would be cheaper to split tickets at Worcester, but then surely it would not be valid to travel New Street to Cheltenham direct on my return, which was the whole point of my original post.

Some interesting oddities here (on the FGW site anyway) For example:

Cheltenham to Birmingham Snow Hill via Smethwick Galton Bridge gives a routing Cheltenham - New Street - Galton Bridge - Snow Hill - for the normal single fare
