Hello all,

As you will (hopefully) be aware, I am in the process of writing a novel, as explained here. This novel is now in its third incarnation, with the first being a completed piece of roughly 35,000 words and the second never finished, and was first inspired by a short story I wrote for a college competition in early 2007. Now, it will be brought forward for real, and I hope to release the finished version - all 70,000+ words of it - not later than October 30th next year!

If I may, I would like to use this thread as a "press release" measure for giving updates on my work. Come this evening, I will have an important announcement to make, and even plan to provide a copy of the opening 2,000 words or so!

I would like to thank you all in advance for any constructive suggestions and criticisms you may have, and for your patience. In the meantime though, if you haven't already, please read my thread "A request relating to Brighton station" - and if you are able to provide help, it would be much appreciated.

Lastly, please note that this thread's name will change upon the upcoming news release to reflect my novel's title. Also, please note that I will not post on this thread again until the time to reveal all arrives later today. I intend to make the all-important announcement at precisely 1900 hours tonight.

Stay tuned...!

*** Official News Release, posted at 1900 on Monday, 21st November 2011 ***

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen of the esteemed RailUK Forums. I trust you are all keeping well.

Nearly five years have passed since I wrote a short story by the name of Sam's Mysterious Condition, penned specifically for a competition at College (which it went on to win), and since then I have taken the inspiration of that short piece and transformed it into a fully-fledged 35,000-word adult novella. And now, more than three years since the first version of this novella was completed, I feel that the time is right to officially announce my work to the public domain!

Set in the middle of the 21st Century, the Tornado Trilogy tells the story of "Samism", a mysterious new religion based on the teachings of a being known only as Sam, who taught that love, light and hope are the most powerful things in existence, and that upon his death a new Heiress to Samism will be born. The trilogy consists of Amy's Reverie, The Mystery of Clarence Street and The Cherubic Chastisement.

In Amy's Reverie, Amy Laindon, of Canvey Island in Essex, collapses in school on her seventeenth birthday. That evening, she allows herself a Samist meditation session, and is stunned to find that in doing so she converses with Sam himself! It soon becomes apparent that Amy is the fabled Heiress to Samism. Meanwhile, she begins to endure a mysterious recurring dream, in which she is sitting with an unknown male youth in a compromising situation but is later subjected to a mighty tornado. Eventually however, Amy ceases to have these same recurring dreams – just before she is abducted by an unknown oppressor! It is up to Amy's friends Rebecca, Michaela and Anna, and in particular her younger sister Chloe, to save Amy from her uncertain fate - but what of her recurring dream...?

Upon its completion (scheduled for some time during the first half of next year), the full version of Amy's Reverie will be at least 70,000 words long, and potentially in excess of 100,000 words long, and will thus be classed as a full novel; it is hoped that the novel will be suitable for reading by anyone aged approximately 13 or higher. Meanwhile, the second and third instalments of the Trilogy, The Mystery of Clarence Street and The Cherubic Chastisement, should be completed within 12 months of the completion of their respective predecessor, and information about these will be released in due course.

For now, that will be all the information I will divest as far as official news releases go. However, I will of course try my best to answer any queries you may have, although keep in mind that I do not as yet wish to reveal every last detail into the public domain. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the following sneak preview of the first 2,000 words or so of Amy's Reverie – and I look forward to hearing your thoughts about both the preview and the work as a whole! (Please keep in mind that this file is read-only, and that any attempted editing will require a password.)

Thank you for your interest in my work, and here is to a successful future for the Trilogy!

Scott Fulcher (a.k.a. Ivo), author of the Tornado Trilogy

You've never heard of Sixth Form?

I can't say I expected that to be the first response I receive...!

Everyone I know calls a sixth form a college :P

Looks good :)

Fair enough. Some schools, including the one I attended, have a Sixth Form facility of their own. The school Amy and the other attend is modelled on one of the schools to have such a facility in Southend (but not the one I attended) and thus has a Sixth Form.

Thank you for the appraisal :)

A sixth form that is attached to a secondary school would normally just be called a school (at least everyone I know that went to my school called it so ;)).

Ivo: I look forward to having a read at some point soon :)

I have to say, that was pretty good. When I first started reading, I was thinking that there was no way in that short extract I would start to know who the characters are, however in that short extract, I felt that I had developed a bond with them.

Only thing I might criticize, Im not really sure what they look like, maybe putting some offhand desription in might help? like 'Amy looked over at her sister, Liams fingers absently playing with the curls in her light brown hair. A pain in her head bought her back from this trance, only now did she realise she had been curling her jet black locks into a tight knot'

Maybe also next to the chapter number you could set the scene, like One : Southend Palace ballroom, 31st december 2046 or something, as I didnt realize it wasnt set in the present until a fair way in?

However I like it a lot, and somehow it reminds me of Chris ryans writing style. I honestly cant wait until I can get ahold of the whole book.

Thank you for the comments. Before I address them, let me remind everyone that I would appreciate such constructive comments, even if they are negative, as they help me to understand what others' impressions are.

In the first version I actually did base each chapter or two around a specific date. However, there was a serious flaw with this approach, which was that the piece was either too fast or too slow, and meant that there were long gaps in the story. I have a means to get around this, as will be shown in due course. The initial piece was split in three segments, with nothing between February and October 2047 inclusive, which just didn't work.

As for the characters' appearance, it is true that I have not as yet made much in the way of physical description, and thinking about it I'm not even sure I did in the original. I have some ideas for their appearances, although I want to be careful to avoid stereotyping (to give an example, Liam, having a remotely Irish name, will not have ginger hair; in fact, his appearance is based on my cousin Liam.) With this in mind, the next passage of the novel, which will complete Chapter One, will describe more thoroughly the sisters' respective appearances, as they go on to have a rather close discussion about Chloe's behaviour; by the end of this passage, we have been treated to our first discussion of Samism (although the revelation is 20 days away yet).

Once again, thank you for the comments. As for the whole thing? I will tell you all that, in addition to the rather weak first version, I have written a plot outline consisting of over 60 key elements in the novel, the first of which is "Amy collapses on New Year's Eve"; these will average roughly two or three per chapter.

I liked the three-way group involvement with the reverse role of the two sisters, where the elder sister compares herself at the age of her younger sister to her present unfulfillment.

An interesting style of writing, which was well word-crafted, from what this short preview revealed.

Thank you Paul. Not a ~0415 response this time then? ;)

I would also like to take the chance to thank all those who have taken an interest, including those who have not yet made any comments.

Thank you all, once again.

An interesting little fact for you: This announcement was made on the 21st of November. According to the official timeline, Chloe's birthday just happens to fall on the 21st of November! I knew there was a reason it was important to me

If anyone is wondering, and does not realise this themselves from the information I've provided above, Amy's birthday is on the 21st of January.

*** Second Update, posted at 1900 on Monday, 5th December 2011 ***

It's that time again, so here is the second progress update for the upcoming novel that is Amy's Reverie.

With the passing of the 4,000 word mark came the first incidence of Amy's recurring dream. In it, as suggested previously, she finds herself in a compromising position with an unidentified youth, and is then subjected to a sudden tornado, which she readily embraces. This dream will be a regular occurrence through the novel right up the point at which she is suddenly abducted later on. See the attached file for the dream sequence. (It has been removed from the main part of this text through "paranoia".)

The other major advance that has been made so far is that one of the main secondary characters, Amy's best friend Rebecca, has been introduced to the story, as has the central figure for the second piece (The Mystery of Clarence Street), Celeste, although her role in this first novel is decidedly minor.

There isn't much else to say this time around - but come the next update, all will be revealed as Amy finds herself communing with the deity of Samism himself! For now though, the dream is what truly matters - it's not as though it's a minor event or something that happens just once...!

As with before, any critical analysis would be welcomed, although I don't expect quite so much this time!

The next update should come on the 19th of December.

Nearly five months since the last update, and - one simple discussion with Mojo and a few others aside - not much has happened with Amy's Reverie in that time, owing to a complication with one specific scene that needs to be completed before work can progress...

Instead, I would like to share another project with you all! Details shan't be released just yet, but will be soon enough - and you may be interested to know that much of it is based around London...!

N.B.: This idea dates back to May 2011. So don't suggest this was stolen from Giugiaro's idea! As it turns out, he was the first on the forum to know...

Hello all,

This post is intended to serve as an announcement of my other work, first created on May 5th last year, which has been waiting in the wings of the forum for the past week. Several of you know some details about it already, and I appreciate that some of this will not be new to you, but I thank you for your patience.

You will no doubt be aware from my Seeking assistance/volunteers thread that I have been requesting others to put themselves forward if they are skilled in the ways of creative arts. In particular, I have been searching for assistance in the ways of music and art, but far from exclusively those fields. This request was put out due to the nature of this work, which I know is something I would struggle with alone due to several issues I have in these areas, which ultimately boil down to a lack of ability.

Now, I will come clean.

I am in the process of creating a children's animated series (cartoon, if you will) entitled Sadie and the Star Squadron.

Sadie and the Star Squadron tells the story of a schoolgirl named Sadie who learns that she and some friends possess some unusual (and often comic) abilities that they must use to stop a maniacal scientist who is trying to belittle London into submitting to him. Sadie is joined in her fight by her brother Samuel, her boyfriend James, her best friend Lisa, and a mysterious new girl at the school named Chloe (who has more than a hint of me about her ;)). The enemy, Dr Agnosto, has been driven to mania by the rest of the scientific community after his work was repeatedly ignored on the grounds of being "unethical", leading him to seek love and power, and with that he creates a biotic servant/wife named Keira, who serves as the face of the "bad guys".

The Star Squadron have to fight against the Doctor and Keira, and their legion of biotic beings (like Keira, but designed for battle) to protect London, whilst overcoming all kinds of obstacles including among others part-time foes the Shadow Squadron. But in doing so, they uncover all manner of dangers and truths that threaten to ruin their progress...

I have thus far planned no less than 52 episodes, 38 of which have a full synopsis (with lengths ranging from 400 words to 1,400 words). In addition, I have a half-written movie plot, which derives from a dream I had in late September last year, and an idea - again from a dream - of how to commence a second season. I have even created a storyboard for one episode, although said storyboard has sadly been lost. In addition, I have written a (rather basic) theme tune, complete with lyrics, and an extended version for use with the movie plot, and have also been given concept sketches by a friend at University of most of the main characters.

Each of the five members of the Star Squadron has their own identity and their own special ability:

Diamond Star Sadie (SuperStar)
Emerald Star James (SuperHuman)
Sapphire Star Chloe (SuperKinesis)
Amethyst Star Lisa (SuperDraw)
Topaz Star Samuel (SuperChant)

SuperStar grows stronger the weaker Sadie gets. In using this ability, a brilliant light emits from Sadie's heart that, at full power, eliminates all traces of darkness within an individual.

SuperHuman doubles James's usual physical abilities, allowing such things as running at 40mph and being able to throw a cricket ball at over 150mph. It is used primarily when physical assaults are the key to victory.

SuperKinesis allows Chloe to psychically move objects around. Used in comparison with Lisa's ability it can be a deadly weapon. However, it is very straining on Chloe and leaves her vulnerable afterwards.

SuperDraw quite literally involves drawing - Lisa can create anything she pleases out of thin air. It is especially effective when used with Chloe's ability. However, her immature nature sometimes gets the better of her.

SuperChant heals Samuel's teammates and can be used repeatedly without too much difficulty, unlike the other abilities; it can also paralyse weak foes. It does not actually benefit Samuel himself though.
Of the five, the most interesting - and seemingly most popular - ability is Lisa's ability.

Character descriptions:

Sadie

15-year-old Sadie Townsend is the primary protagonist of the series, and as such her name appears in the title. Sadie has a strong sense of justice and does not enjoy seeing things going wrong, or indeed the suffering of other people – even where their suffering is for the greater good. To Sadie, no loss is ever necessary, and she will always strive to save one and all, even her enemies. In addition to the above, Sadie has a strong will, a strong heart and a strong love of existence. Sadie finds it easy to associate with her peers and is thus often at the centre of many discussions, ideas and adventures. However, one thing she lacks is a strong mind. Her intelligence is average – if that – and she struggles with certain types of academia, especially mathematics. This one flaw is a regular problem for Sadie at school, but elsewhere in life she is usually well-equipped to deal with all but the most extreme of scenarios.

James

The lead male of the Star Squadron, physically fit James has aspirations to become a top sports star. Tennis, cricket, rugby, golf, hockey and cycling are just some of the activities he partakes in regularly, although he dislikes the two most common games called football. James can run 100m in 11 seconds, can serve at over 120mph, and can drive a golf ball over 250m. He is almost predictably very competitive and rarely accepts defeat. For such an athletic person, he is also surprisingly intelligent, and is a prospective Red Brick student. James sees himself as Sadie’s best male friend and probably second overall to Lisa, although Sadie herself never suggests as much. Instead, she harbours stronger feelings for James, and often wonders why he doesn’t reciprocate!

Chloe

Chloe is new to London at the start of the series. A former denizen of Colchester, she moves to Kensington owing to an unknown family problem, and is sent to Clapham for schooling purposes. A gifted mathematician, Chloe is more than capable in most forms of academia, and can easily recite much of that which she has learned in her time in education. However, Chloe is not particularly adept at the art of socialising, and can be a target for the perennial school bully (a reason for her leaving her previous school, but not Colchester as a whole). In addition, Chloe is not very athletic, and her idea of exercise usually revolves around mental aspects as opposed to the physical version. At her new school though, this balance is evened up a little, courtesy of her becoming friends with Sadie and, through her, the physically fit James. Chloe has a darker side to her heritage which she is unaware of until late in the series - but I shan't spoil it...!

Lisa

Flirty Lisa is Sadie’s “partner in crime” when it comes to all things girly. Whether it be fashion, celebrities, shopping, or a whole host of other things, Lisa is the definitive source. In fact, Lisa makes Sadie look like a novice in some respects. She has an active interest in music and loves to visit concerts. She is a strong follower of models, and even has a life-long dream to become a Hollywood star. Lisa is also the artist of the group. She excels in the creative aspects of life, and loves to visit galleries, museums and more during her spare time. However, as with her best friend she is somewhat lacking in intellect, and would happily suggest that the current Pop Chart is far more important in the wider scheme of things than the many Laws of Physics. Her artistic capability does however lend itself to Lisa being able to show off to others at times, which can annoy her friends.

Samuel

"Part-time" Star Squadron member Samuel is the last to demonstrate his ability in the series. Brother to Sadie and mentor to James, Samuel is an undergraduate at the University of the West of England and lives in nearby Yate. He often returns to Clapham to help his sister and her boyfriend-to-be in various aspects of their lives, including among others encouraging Sadie to tell James how she feels about him! He is very supportive of his sister and does not accept seeing her struggle at school too easily. Samuel enjoys travelling however, so the 110mi journey home does not bother him very much. Similarly, if for any reason Sadie or her friends need something done for them in an area that is not easily accessible to them, but is reasonable to Samuel, he will rarely hesitate to help where he is able to.

I think that will do for now; I've said enough.

So there you have the reason for my request for assistance.

You have given a good breakdown of the attributes of the main grouping of the "good" side of the equation.

Will you be making and publishing on this thread, a similar breakdown of those "characters for evil" against whom your team "for good" will battle against ?

I wondered if someone would ask that. I will do before long, but I thought that the above is enough for the moment - I don't want to say too much too suddenly in case the excessive amount of material puts people off! The attributes of the remaining prominent characters, including Dr Agnosto, will be revealed later today.

In addition, I will be revealing a very basic summary of the movie plot at the same time. So far, the full version (which is roughly 50% done) stands at just under 6,500 words; I will aim to summarise the whole thing in 300.

Character descriptions, part II

Dr Agnosto

Educated at Cambridge and a former lecturer at Essex, Dr Agnosto was one of the most widely-renowned authorities in the field of genetic engineering. He sought to improve the world with his work, to relieve humanity of many of the cellular and biological threats to its existence, and to destroy any remaining traces of darkness within himself in order for him to make his work even more effective. However, the scientific community deemed his work "unnatural" and "unethical" - and the Doctor was driven to insanity. Finally, after a six-month spell at a local hospital, he tried again - but the scientific community was no longer interested in his work. Although he maintained his links to Cambridge, and occasionally served as a visiting lecturer, no other major institution – not even Essex – would accept him, and slowly the Doctor resumed his fall from grace. Cambridge continued to support him, but he had gone too far; and finally, Dr Agnosto himself severed ties to Cambridge and the rest of the academic world. He sought justice, security, and love. This led the Doctor on a twisted new scheme – to create life.

Keira

The brainchild and creation of Dr Agnosto, Keira is the world’s most complete biotic being and is brought to life at the start of Episode 1. Keira can boast more artificial intelligence and processing power than most supercomputers, a greater understanding of her creator than most humans learn about absolutely anything in their entire lifetime, and a more beautiful body than even the most stunning model could ever dream of. Keira was designed with one thing in mind – to serve her creator and master in any way he may require. And no matter the task she is set, as long as it came from her master Keira will undertake to complete it to his exact liking. Keira truly is the most perfect being to have ever existed - and in some respects, it could be said that Keira is also the perfect wife, for she will never say no to the man in her life, no matter what he requests.

Gregory

Gregory is the leader of the Shadow Squadron and orders his allies around like a naval commander. He is strong physically but also short-tempered and does let himself down on occasion in this sense; he has even served time at Feltham Young Offenders’ Institute. Nonetheless, he is an effective leader and never backs down unless he acknowledges that it is in his best interests to do so. Gregory’s special power links in to this passionate side, in that it releases a wave of fire in any direction he wishes that can burn and seriously injure even the most resistant of foes. Gregory is somewhat greedy though, and always insists on a good payment – all in advance – before he will agree to the use of his team’s services. Unlike his team mates, Shadow Fire Gregory feels that the Star Squadron is not worthy compared to his own team. He believes that they need a numerical advantage just to even out the playing field a bit, but even then he feels that his team is far more able.

Daniel

Daniel is the smart member of the Shadow Squadron. He usually knows how to escape from awkward situations, and is the one who develops the team’s tactics for battle. However, he can appear to be a little cold and stubborn at times, although in practice this is rarely the reality. Daniel is not as well specialised at physical combat as Gregory and Michael, but otherwise is more than a match for his associates. His special ability is based around electrical energy, which can on occasion leave those who are unfortunate to feel its power completely (if temporarily) paralysed. Unlike his team-mates, Shadow Lightning Daniel has a warm heart, but comes from a strongly pressured background which saw his parents killed roughly one year before the events of the series. He seeks revenge against those whom he feels are responsible for their (and his) loss, and thus joins the Shadow Squadron in an attempt to set things right.

Michael

Michael is his own man and fights for himself. He has little interest in other people, even his own team, and claims to have no friends at all. Stubborn at the best of times, Michael always believes that his ideas are the best in existence, even where the evidence to the contrary is painstakingly strong. This stern behaviour is reflected in his elemental power, which unleashes a spiral of ice which can freeze his foes on occasion, and slow them down almost invariably. As with Gregory, Shadow Ice Michael does not believe that the Shadow Squadron should be thought of as an equal to the Star Squadron, but he does accept that the latter are a worthy adversary. He often tries too hard though, and often feels this after any confrontations! Michael does not collaborate well with his own team for the most part, and his working relationships with the Star Squadron are very poor.

In addition, as stated last night, here is a summary of the movie plot:

With the Agnosto Saga firmly behind them, the Star Squadron are celebrating Chloe's 16th birthday, and learn that she intends to take them on a tour of London for her birthday - when suddenly a situation arises at an art exhibition at Earl's Court that the team have to deal with. The team soon find out that their new foes, Lord Miltonville and his assistant Lady Stern, are far more dangerous to them that they could possibly have imagined - and far more cunning too. Lord Miltonville disguises himself as an art dealer at the same exhibition the following day and almost instantly lures an unwitting Lisa into buying a sculpture of his, resulting in the Star Squadron falling right into a trap! And before long, things get worse when Samuel mysteriously disappears!

Sure enough, Chloe gets her birthday wish, but not in the style she had hoped for in that she has to lead the Star Squadron on a tedious sojourn across London in a bid to find Samuel, encountering all kinds of trouble - including Lady Stern and the Miltonville Myriad, a group of beings similar to those created by Dr Agnosto - along the way. But later on history repeats itself, and before long Sadie is all alone! Can Sadie recover her allies, stop Lord Miltonville's sinister plot and save the city from the impending disaster?

Lastly, please find attached a beta title frame. Obviously it is subject to change, but this is what I have so far. Note in particular the "dot" on the "i" in "Sadie" - it took a lot of work! :p And if you are wondering where the file name came from - the original is a .bmp file

This is superb Scott!

The quality of your descriptions is great, and I'm already hooked, good work :)

I do have one question however, do you have an artist/animator for this, as a cartoon, however good the story is, needs good graphics (as you obviously know ;) ), or do you plan to find them at a later date?

PS: you asked if my mother is at all skilled at songwriting, I'm afraid she isn't, or rather she's never tried it, so we don't know

Relating to art etc, why do you think I asked for help? I could probably manage a short cartoon (say, 90 seconds, or 2,160 frames at 24fps) within two weeks if I tried hard enough, but the quality would be very poor - and it may not even be in colour. I know that other people are better at animating than me.

My idea was to find a select group of skilled artists who could help me create a "beta" cartoon which could then be used as part of any formal submission. Should it then be successful, it would become part of any run-of-the-mill (and probably Korean) animation studio's workload - under my supervision of course. And upon release, all who helped with the original concept would have a credit to their name, and if they're skilled (and lucky) enough I might even ask them to write an episode. At some stage, I would hope to bring everyone together, even if it was just once and/or over the Internet, so we can all discuss things.

P.S.: I would strongly expect that your mother would have a least a little talent for songwriting, given her success in poetry. I know being good at one doesn't automatically make you good at the other, but I would be surprised if it was not true here!

-----------------------

If you haven't already done so, please check my Art Competition thread! :p

Also, I have done a quick search on my Desktop computer, and can tell you all that at precisely 02:35:51 on Saturday 5th, one year will have passed since I first created a file that would have details of the series in it. How sad is that?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I just wanted to point out that the project is now one year old !

Nearly five months since the last update, and - one simple discussion with Mojo and a few others aside - not much has happened with Amy's Reverie in that time, owing to a complication with one specific scene that needs to be completed before work can progress...

Can I refer to what you have said above about a complication with one specific scene. Nearly five months is quite a long time for an intermission in that storyline and I wonder if you can give any more information with regard to the problem, in order that others on the forum could assist you in this matter, if this is possible, unless it is a creativity problem with the actual storyline, in which case only you, as the author, can resolve.

It's a case of trying to find a solution, and then getting side-tracked in doing so until it got to the point that it fell by the way-side and suffered. In other words, I tried but then lost motivation with it. So until the point comes that I feel up for trying again (which to be fair should have been before now) I won't be going anywhere fast with that. Once that hurdle is cleared, things will be much easier because the next while will primarily be a case of rewriting old material.

And yes, I know this is a lame/disappointing explanation.

Have you considered starting a blog?

Only enough times to have lost count of the number of times. To be perfectly honest, I've just never really seen enough of a point to do so. I tend to write too much for a blog to work. Even if I only had to recount a very small event, unless I had an incentive to could it short I wouldn't.

I know I should try though...

My idea was to find a select group of skilled artists who could help me create a "beta" cartoon which could then be used as part of any formal submission.

I guess a picture drama would do the trick. It's simple and basic and, although it uses some images, it doesn't require all the work involved on an animation. The only inconvenient is that you'll need voice actors and sounds, necessarily.
