Out of interest, does anyone know what the cheapest (single) ticket is between two UK stations? 50p? 40p? 30p?

The cheapest I have found so far are some 80p fares between intermediate stations on the ATW Borderlands Line - e.g. Penyfford to Buckley.

The cheapest ticket Merseyrail seem to sell is a £1.50 SDS, so I have ruled them out. I know that there was that 10p Chiltern fare a few weeks ago, but as that's been pulled there's no need to mention it. ;)

Thanks. :)

Are you counting Priv?

SBJ-SBT is a good bet, surely.

Nope, I'm not counting any sort of discount, including PRIV.

SBJ-SBT is a good choice, but still 80p (which is the same as mine), so you haven't won a prize yet. ;)

Lichfield City - Lichfield Trent Valley is 50p.

Lichfield wins hands-down.

I bought my niece the Child rate ticket over the Summer so she could have a ticket of her own (seen as she's only 4), which set me back the not-so-princely cost of 25p. With a standard Railcard the price is 35p; with a PRIV it is 15p (as is the return).

I am disappointed that ATW in South Wales seems to have a minimum fare of £1.40 single!

Ooo yes, that's a good one. You win the prize! :D (Which, erm, happens to be that sentence. ;) Unless someone can find an even cheaper fare, which would really surprise me.)

Ah yes, well those lot in South Wales are made of money, so Arriva must squeeze every last penny out of them! It did surprise me that some very short journeys on the Cardiff Valley Lines cost £1.40, which is quite expensive compared to journeys near Wrexham.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. It's generally considered that fares in the Valleys are quite low, but not for going one stop, apparently (if anyone ever does).

HDM Haddenham & Thame parkway -- WND Wendover was a bet with a 10p Single (PRIV/YP 5p) until Chiltern changed it halfway through NFM 10.

I'd say the Lichfield one is a contender.

I bought this as a return ticket but never got round to using it! All that money gone down the drain...

Is that to the town centre? It costs me 1.10 single or 1.90 return from The Bus stop on Northway Lane to Tewkesbury town centre.

How do you get such a cheap bus fare?

If the criteria wasn't just "single" tickets, it may well have been possible for a Zero fare excess to win, as has been pointed out a few times in the past on this forum. ;)

As long as you have a valid rail ticket to Tewkesbury, you can buy it from ticket offices/guards.

The fares are :

Day Single 50p
Day Return 90p
Month Return 90p

Valid to Northway/Town Centre/Wheatpieces/Gupshill Manor

You can buy.through fares from Cheltenham,Gloucester.

So a single from Ty Glas to Birchgrove (distance 17 chains) would cost 8p per chain or £6.58 per mile.
At this rate a single from Holyhead to Cardiff (distance 233 miles via Wrexham) would cost £1533

Ah, but a single from Leicester Square to Covent Garden (about 11 chains iirc) is £4...

Ah yes, but no one needs to pay that, as you can get an Oyster, use it and spend £1.90 then return it straight away.

You could also try getting some exercise! ;)

Oddly, if you look on Wikipedia, that most accurate of websites, the page for Lake has a picture of an old-style SDS from there to shanklink, priced £0.70 - "the cheapest ticket on the network". When we all know very well that it isn't...

I wonder if my niece still has her Lichfield ticket? It's even more amusing given even her mother has no idea where Lichfield is, never mind the little lady herself...!

So fix it then :P

(Always annoys me when people point out where Wikipedia is wrong and completely forget that they're supposed to correct it.)

I know that annoys some people. But I only use Wikipedia to read, otherwise I'd be correcting every second article! :p
