following on from the cheapest - what is the most expensive in terms of pence per minute journey standard class no discounts. The Lichfield City to Lichfield Trent Valley was 50p for 5 minutes i.e. 10ppm at it's most expensive. Southampton Airport Parkway to Swaythling is 170p for 2 minutes or 85ppm

Aren't some withdrawn tickets priced at £999.99 on websites, as they only update their database?

I don't know what the distance is but London Blackfriars to City Thameslink is £2.20, or if it counts on the DLR West India Quay to Canary Wharf £4.00 without an Oystercard.

We have had this discussion before although cannot find the exact thread now. Any pence per minute comparisons are largely pointless as generally speaking one pays more for a faster journey.

Absolute values are quite interesting IMHO. The absolute most expensive anytime single appears to be, at £269, Newquay to Sheffield route +CHESTERFIELD, priced by EMT. £2 more expensive than Penzance to Wick!

Birchgrove to Ty Glas - 17 chains (340 metres approx) from platform to platform and £1.40 SDS.

You've won so far AlterEgo, I looked up your journey and it's booked to take only 1 minute, so £1.40 per minute!

Wolverton - Milton Keynes is also pretty expensive. £2.30 SDS for a three minute journey. (some services are booked 4 minutes, some 3 minutes. No idea why.)

Some long-distance fares come pretty close to my Ty Glas example, too.

Manchester to Euston takes 2h07 on the faster trains, at a price of £139.50.

Almost £1.10 a minute.

Either the Heathrow Express, or the Heathrow Connect between Hayes and Harlington and Heathrow is surely a contender?

Dorking West to Dorking Deepdene costs £1.90 for an Anytime Single. The journey time is roughly 2 minutes. Probably not a winner for pence per minute but in terms of silliness it is.

How does it make it any more 'silly' than the others?

Possibly Stratford International to Ebbsfleet International? Takes a minimum of 10 minutes at £13.90 = £1.39 a minute.

That's an incredibly close one. My Ty Glas example was £1.40/min. You can talk dirty to a stranger in a call centre for less!

I will bash Wales one day and tell you how many seconds it takes to do the trip....

Moreton to Leasowe on Merseyrail, £1:50, only 1 mile, & 2 minutes journey time, also £1:50 Wallasey Village-Wallasey Grove Road & think that's just under a mile.

Purely Dorking West's local reputation of being a completely unnecessary station, where there are fewer passengers than trains by my calculations. I take your point though - most of the rest are a bit mad, the Stratford ticket notwithstanding. Don't take me too seriously, though ;)

Walton (Mersey) to Orrell Park is £1.50 and is only 30 chains away, (0.4miles) timed at 1 minute. Apparently you can see one station from the other :?

It is most likely going to be a Merseyrail Electrics ticketing combo that will be most expensive per minute.

Wallasey Village to Wallasey Grove Road is 25 chains away, (0.3miles) also for £1.50 and is timed at 1 minute.

Morecambe to Bare Lane is £1.50. That can only be a mile or two?
