Have men's culinary tastes really changed that much?

Glenda: Will you be hone for lunch, Barry?
Barry: What's for lunch?
Glenda: I thought I'd do a nice Tuna Salad with french dressing.
Barry: Mmmm. I'll be home for lunch

Tuna salad? As the midday meal?

I'm a steak and kidney pie guy, sausages and mash in oinion gravy, lasagne,
faggots and mash, fish fingers and chips, chicken and mushroom pie and chips. That's real food for a man needing to fill a hole at lunchtime

It's that Great British culinary custom: Take one food item, and place another one next to it: Fish and chips, sausage and mash, pie and chips...Need I go on? Good wholesome food where you know exactly what you're getting. :)

Lunch tends to be a relatively simple affair for me (especially considering that I don't get a decent lunch break every day, what with lectures etc.) Cheap and cheerful is how lunch tends to be...

Tuna salad not my kind of thing but salad in general is a winner for lunch for me.

Trouble in general with those is it requires a way to cook them which for most working people is a problem, unless you are rich enough to be able to afford to eat out every day for lunch or lucky enough to have an oven in your workplace.

I used to take a sandwich or salad to work every day as realistically it was the only thing practical for me. Now I'm lucky enough to be at home most lunchtimes I can afford to have something a little different, such as soup, mussels, salmon or something else.

Mussels for lunch? Surely not!

These days my lunches are mostly sandwiches, sometimes a nice pie on a saturday in the work canteen, but all we have at school is a coffee machine which doesn't do just hot water (so not even ready meals where you just add water :( )

you should campeign for a hot water dispencer a some people drink strange verieties of tea as wel!

I do like a salad etc0sometimes and if at home as I often am may make one. Agree though I0do like the bangers and mash type of cooking and not forgetting a good roast! When i'm bashing and if I'm starting from home an essfntial part of my preperations is a cupple of good doorstep sarnies, corned beef or something and a bottle of orrange squash!

A typical work day today...

At dinner I had sandwiches and a yoghurt which I took to work , for tea I'm having stuffed belly pork with mash and veg (peas and sprouts of anyone is interested). It's all cooking at the moment!

I do realise that my post may confuse a few people, especially those living in the south.

Salad is defiantly up there for me - pasta salads, caesar, nicoise etc. I like pie and chips and those types of things - but I'd prefer a quiche or something!

To be honest if scotch eggs, scotch pies and bacon butties were the only foods left on Earth I'd be happy!

Think I might be the only one who got that reference to dinner and tea!

I used to have quite a set routine when cooking for myself - normally steak and chips, pork and mash, curry, sweet and sour chicken then fish on a Friday. But no longer cooking for myself so it could be anything.

Yep, lentils, carrots, potato, tomato and some other stuff but I've forgotten :| Also some mini-baguettes (the part-bake ones) with some cheese.

How can you all eat all that for lunch? What do you have for dinner afterwards, is there room for any more?! I can't face more than a couple of that sort of meal a week! And I'd sleep through my afternoon!

I am in my late 20s, and I am ever more aware that if I don't eat well, I will pile on the sort of weight that may never come off again. Lunches for me are either a sandwich (brown bread), a tin of light soup, a salad. Sometimes I'll treat myself to sushi. My evening meals are rarely high in fat and almost always made from scratch.

I guess it depends who you speak to, but in my case, the answer to your question seems to be yes!

A few months back I arranged to meet the carpet fitters for a flat we let. 10am on the dot, after first job, they roll up. Now you know how hard these guys have to work, on contract to Carpet right or whoever...Well the flat's above a bacon butty shop that mainly attracts schoolkids and builders.
'Good timing lads...bacon butties are on the go'...'Nah nah we're salad boys now' whereupon they produced their own plastic boxes brimming with leaves and bits...that, my friends is in't North too. Jamie or somebody is hitting home...me I'm a lentil/veg soup man, can't beat it!

I was also brought up on dinner in the middle of the day and tea later on!

I tend to have sandwiches in work, and a main meal in the evening. Tonight it's grileld bacon, scrambled egg and tomato, but I am not averse to a nice salad, or soup with a bit of bread and cheese!

I try not to eat pies, chips or sausages too often, but now and again I can't resist it!

Surely our taste and preferneces adapt to what we are comfortable with, which over time is both what we enjoy and what is available?
Trouble in general with those is it requires a way to cook them which for most working people is a problem, . . . . .
Exactly! I love cooking, but its not possible for me to cook during the day, and so I've become so accustomed to not eating at 'lunchtime' that I can honestly say that my body's little reminders to eat just don't operate between morning and evening.

As for actual preferences, well I guess I'd be considered a 'fussy eater' or a 'foodie' by many, though the truth is that I nearly always prefer simple foods over processed ingredients or manufactured 'meals'.
When working away, I'll have a simple and light breakfast at home, maybe a sandwich or samosa in the day, and eat a meals made from fresh (and usually organic) ingredients, either on the train (cf. the restaurant car threads on here) or more probably now, when I get home.
But the OP's question was more general. I'd reply by suggesting that taste and practice are constantly evolving (as do tastes in music, views of morality, usage of speech, chosen social groupings etc. etc.). What I find interestng about those changes is in identifying the drivers for change. Many are commercial, some are availability, and some I find inexplicable.

I virtually live on toast when I'm not at home. Cold sandwiches just don't do it for me :( so I usually have a bit of cold meat or even dunking a couple of biscuits in a cuppa. I always made sure I took at least 20 minutes for dinner

my work canteen do jacket potatoes that are to die for! I alternate between tuna mayo and cheese with a side salad, and chicken tikka with a side salad.
