I've noticed on the brickwork under the Chester bound platform at Knutsford they've painted vertical yellow lines at equal intervals then in between the lines they've put letters A through to Z, then continued AA, AB, AC and AD, giving 30 in total. Is this related to measuring the platform length?

I never noticed, I'll have a look next time I'm through there and figure it out (or ask a P-way lad) as they are doing alot of work in that area, Track renewal etc. it may have something to do with that

Maybe for measuring the level of the platform or track using an automatic level? Seems a rather inaccurate way of measuring for anything but more than that.

If it's not that, not a clue.

I only noticed it yesterday and it looked fairly fresh paint.

Is the platform a long one?
Is it curved?

The platform in the other direction is the same length and has stop boards for 4 car and 6 car. The one that's marked doesn't have a stop board but every train stops at the furthest end of the platform. Both platforms are straight.

At one end of the platforms the A50 goes over the railway lines, at the other end there's a bridge where the railway lines go over a minor road.

Best marking I've seen on a platform is "Class 142 here" in chalk. This was at Darlington after a Northern service rear-ended a 225 set.
