Kentish Town to East Grinstead

Hi,

I am a consultant living in Kentish Town who has to start working in East Grinstead. This will be a return journey on week days only at peak times.

As the journey is longer then normal my company fits the bill for travel. Normally i work in central London so everything can be covered on my Oyster card but saw that East Grinstead is just outside of Zone 6.

Is it possible to purchase a Zone 1-6 travel card and then an extension to East Grinstead? If so how? Or will the remainder of the fare come off of my PAYG Oyster balance? If the latter do you know how much it is likely to be? I only ask as i will have to expense and provide evidence of the journey which is simple if i just get a Zone 1-6 travel card.

I would also like to know the best route to get there for about 9:30am? Fastes route possible please and there can be no flexibility as it is work

You could get a Z1-6 Travelcard loaded onto your Oyster and combine it with a Season ticket to cover the rest of the journey. I have no idea what season ticket would be best, but there are many helpful people on here who I'm sure can advise!

Routingwise, the Journey planners seem to suggest either Kentish town to St Pancras (FCC), St Pancras to Victoria on the tube and Victoria to East Grinstead (Southern Trains) or...

Kentish Town to Farringdon (FCC), Farringdon to East Croydon (FCC), then East Croydon to East Grinstead (Southern Trains). Seems a bit long winded to me. You could use the Overground to connect to Clapham Junction (47mins) and then get an East Grinstead service from there.

Since East Grinstead is outside the Oyster zones, you can't touch out there so you would definitely need a paper ticket to cover at least part of the journey.

A East Grinstead to Zones 1 - 6 Travelcard Season costs:

7 Day Season £69.70
1 Month Season £267.70
Annual Season £2788.00

As you can see it is a lot cheaper to get it all on one ticket.

Oyster PAYG is not available to East Grinstead at present, and I'm unaware of any immediate plans to change that.

Best route or fastest route? And if the former, do you mean less interchanges and/or less walking between stations, depends how you define best.

The TfL journey planner thinks the fastest route is:

Kentish Town - London Bridge (Northern Line)
London Bridge - East Grinstead (Southern)

If an 0918 arrival time at East Grinstead station is suitable for you.

Departing Kentish Town at approx 0750 should comfortably make the 0825 train from London Bridge. For the trains before/after that, the TfL planner suggests changing to the Victoria line and travelling via Victoria, but that would be unpleasant at peak times.

That would be a very long way round, however if the OP lives very near Kentish Town West station, then it would avoid a 10 minute walk to Kentish Town station, and avoiding Zone 1 would make it cheaper, so it could be worth considering in certain circumstances perhaps. But even if you lived right next to West station, it'd be quicker to walk to Kentish Town or Chalk Farm to be honest, even if you're a slow walker.

Any staffed ticket office can sell you the season ticket you want, as the bit from Upper Warlingham will be a paper ticket, your local station should be able to issue this.

I can see why you'd rather opt for this, as it must be awkward to square the cost with your work otherwise, if you bought the combined EGR-1-6 ticket then how would you and your work calculate the contributions?! Although the combined ticket is cheaper overall...catch 22!
