Just watching Coronation Street (sad I know) on STV.

They have a competition with an easy answer you have to text in.

The cost is £1.50 and the prize is £1000 (just Scotland remember) with the winner being announced on STV the same night before 11pm.

I wonder how many people enter (they need 667 to cover the prize money) and whether this information would be in the public domain so you can see how many people enter and how much they are making.

For example if 5000 people entered they would rake in £7500 leaving a healthy profit after deducting the prize money and no doubt a cut to the phone provider.

Any ideas ?

I've often wondered if the free website entries to these competitions and the premium rate phoneline entries are treated on the same basis.

It's a bit like a certain club's prize draw where your entries were posted in "Yes" or "No" envelopes depending on whether you wanted to take up their offer.

I'm sure there was no impropriety involved of course.

I've often wondered about the web entries as well - when they had those trashy late night ones on ITV Quiz Call or whatever I never heard them announce a winner who had entered on the web - ie free.

If you mean the company that sends out mountains of increasingly complex junk mail / entry forms ( delete as appropriate ), I have suspicions myself because their list of big winners is exclusively full of people who have said yes to whatever new book they were being offered. I have never seen a person who entered "draw only" get a big prize... If they are filtering out the "no thanks - draw entry only" people from the actual draw then they are breaking the law big time.

Strange isn't it, considering that the company in question used to ( up until the 1990s ) campaign against exactly the sort of things it now does routinely...??

I too have my suspicions but alas it would be very hard to prove such an allegation

Surely the list of winners sort of incriminates them to some degree? What is the statistical chance that 100% of the winners in 100% of the draws all said yes to the offer...?

Channel 4 and the BBC are covered by the Freedom of Information Act. I know the BBC don't run competitions like this, do Channel 4? If so maybe you could ask them? It may be covered by one of the exceptions though, such as commercial sensitivity.

Are ITV/STV and Channel 5 excluded as they are not public service broadcasters?

Most of these shows are on the above two.
