hi
it's quite old news now but the class 37s from network rail are set to disappear and be replaced by class 57s and i just wanted to hear your opinion?
personally i love 37s aswell as 57s but i would sooner have a 37 thrashing about :)
thanks

I suppose it's cheaper for Network Rail in the long run because the 37's aren't getting any younger so I suppose they want something a bit more reliable.

The 97/3s are fitted with ERTMS specifically for the Cambrian. Not heard of the 57/3s being so fitted so how can they replace them? The 57s are doing snow and ice clearing in winter and said to be headed for other infrastructure work in the warmer months, in preference to FOC hire-ins. Not replacing 97/3s AFAIK. Possibly replacing DRS hire ins which may include 37s, is this what you mean?

Have I missed something?

I'd say so. 57's just seem a more practical option to me. I'm sure most drivers would choose a 57 over a 37.

Rubbish, the 37's aren't going anywhere.

302, 3 and 4 are the only ERTMS fitted engines in the country and thus indispensable for Cambrian operations. They're reliable enough, especially given the money spent on them. They were practically returned to 0 hours I believe.

The 57's were sourced for different work.

Do you mean the hired in DRS locomotives or the NR ERTMS fitted Class 97's? Impossible to get rid of the 97's as they are the only ERTMS fitted locos in the country.

EDIT - DOH , didnt read the post form Hydro (apologies):oops::oops:

Thunderbirds, snow trains, possibly a bit of test work...

AFAIK the DRS hire ins are going nowhere. In fact there seems to be more of them floating around than normal.
