dmu class 140

Hi, The Keith and Dufftown railway has a class 140, went past the other day, its not moved for 20 years, is there any plans to get this working?

Well it says on their website it is awaitng restoration - so perhaps! It is unique and irc it was built to much higher standards than the 142/3/4 units

It's appearance doesn't give me much confidence in that statement: It looks to me like it would be even worse than a 141!

It's a terrible shame to see this valuable unit, seminal in the development of second generation MUs, collecting mildew and decaying like it currently is.

How did this survive and not end up in the national collection?! It is surely the pioneer, or one of them, of BR's second generation DMUs, I'd have thought it would warrant a space at York, particularly considering it'll be a fair old while before anything still in service becomes available.

Another prototype Railbus, subsequently sold to NIR, is preserved at Downpatrick, in much better nick than the 140. Nice that this has been saved, while NIR's own 'seminal train', that is a representative of one of the DEMUs that were mainstay for 30+ years, looks likely to succumb one and all to the cutter's torch.

From the writings of the time the font end was built to a higher standard than the later types. From what I remember the 140 was built to the specification of the time and by the time the 141 etc was ordered the specification had been withdrawn and replaced with a different one.

It's worth noting the image (or atleast appears to be) an HDR image or tone mapped/processed, which exagerates things like dirt/wrinkles/cracks.

Not quite. The 141/142 have a specially designed front end, compare it with the standard National front used on the LEVs. The standard National front couldn't be used on the 142 as it is wider than the bus and the 141. The standard National front end didn't meet all of the needs of the safety requirements which was main reason behind the new front being devised.

To me, it looks like a cross between a class 150/2 and a 142.

They brought it down the Cambrian in the early 80's and it couldn't climb up Talerdigg on its own power - thankfully we've never seen a Pacer.

The cab looks more PEP influenced than like a class 150 or any mk III unit, which fits given when it was produced.

I was referring to the appearance (design would have been a better word to use) of the class 140 in general, rather than just its' current decrepit condition.

Rather handy that the Leyland light cluster could be adapted for a tail lamp to be built into the cluster where the indicator would normally be

The 141 also sported the standard Leyland bus desk and the DSD was a bus brake pedal!
