As a bet, I am going to attempt to go a week starting from 7pm this evening to not access Facebook.

As such the homepage on my netbook has been changed to Twitter, and the Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps and bookmark from Safari have been temporarily removed from my iPhone.

I will be using Twitter and SMS/iMessage/What's App to communicate with the outside world for the next week as well as a blog I have set up - http://7dayswithoutfacebook.blogspot.com/

If I am successful then I have been given another challenge - 7 Days Without All Social Networks!

Please support me as much as you can by Tweeting me - @disownedinc or by using the hash tag #7dayswithoutfacebook or emailing me at [email protected] or leaving a comment on the blog or this thread.

Thanks all!

Sounds interesting, I wonder how it will be established whether or not you go on Facebook or not? You may also find it beneficial to wipe your history and bookmarks if necessary

I love the way you are staying off one social networking site, but have to use another instead... :D

That's the one thing I forgot to do ...

And I dunno - the person who made the bet with me is now saying she's not on there atm, but there's bound to me something on my account that will say when I accessed it.

Ha, I wasn't told not to use any other social networking site/app ... :P

But my next challenge is to not use any social network for a week ...

By a strange quirk of fate today I completed 48 years 6 months and 26 days without using Facebook. I found it remarkably easy if I am honest. Have also managed to rack up the same amount of time without using Twatter. I think I deserve some sort of medal

To be honest the whole facebook thing baffles me, no idea why people get so obsessed with it. In truth I did sign up years ago to see what it is all about and have used in total for around 5 minutes in the last 5 years. Now deactivated the account and got on with life - it's much more fun

It will be interesting to see what the future will bring though. It wasn't all that long ago when emailing your thoughts about a program was second to posting them in a letter

I'm against it. If they've got anything worth saying, they'll come down the pub and say it. Otherwise bugger them.

When I was at uni, some of the guys I knew did the same thing - and they managed it.

I'm afraid to say I am a fairly regular Facebook user. Twitter, however, I have lived without and have no intention to change that anytime soon!

I can't see the point of using Facebook to talk to people you see every day, that's pointless and frankly a bit sad, but I have friends who live a long way away who I only see every couple of months, to keep in touch with them and their lives, it really is useful.

I only joined it to maintain contact with people I otherwise wouldn't have it with when I left home (and then it was done for me without my say-so!). Until literally a week or so ago I had averaged about one visit a month...

Best of luck to the OP. Maybe some others will see this and realise there's more to life that these Stupid Sites?

I've lasted 22 years without facebook. I'm 22 years old. :D
I would probably say that twitter is more useful than facebook.

Am I the only one who ISN'T on facebook?

No, there are still a few old-timers like me who do not feel the need to use them and can manage quite well without them. How do you think people managed in the 1960's and 1970's without all this new technology? It was not like being in the Stone Age then...and much more peaceful on train or bus journeys..

Am I the only one who thinks that most of this modern "technology" is actually nothing more than a waste of time (and money)? Or, at the very least, am I the only one aged under ~30 to feel this way?

No, you're not... I'm old fassioned when it comes to technology...

I don't go for shiney new things, I get somthing that does what I want it to do, and thats rare for someone under 25... Even rarer for a 'computer geek', although not so rare for an Engineer aparently.

personally I find that Email is quite adequate for any requirements I might have. I rarely find that the need arises to let all my Followers know exactly what i intend to do today, or what my views are about X Factor. in fact, i find the whole idea of having Followers slightly sinister.

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me why I really 'need' Facebook or Twitter accounts. I seem to have managed quite well without for the last 60 years.
I can, kind of, see the point why a business could find such things useful for disseminating time sensitive information but the danger is that it will get swamped in all the trivia while there are better methods.

I've been using it since I moved away from my home area, to keep contact with old friends, I'm quite particular who I add as friends, and have highest security levels.

Agreed, though I will admit to spending far too much time fiddling with photos and browsing forums on various computers

Well said!

I am on Facebook, I must admit, but I live with my girlfriend and the core element of my friendship group, so I can manage perfectly well without it if I so wished, but I do find it useful for keeping track of family members and friends way back in north east England.

I'm waiting for someone to tell me why we "need" the Internet, the telephone, the television and Morse Code to name but a few. Why use computers to make animated shows when stop-motion does just fine?
The answer: It makes our lives easier and it provides us with entertainment. Facebook has this image of being very lax on privacy and a reputation for adding everyone and anyone regardless of whether you know them or not. I freely admit that the former is a valid concern yet you can change privacy settings.

It was rumoured that social media (mainly facebook and twitter) helped prevent further escalation of this summer's unrest.

Sure people managed in the 60s and 70s in much the same way they managed without internet or central heating for the most part (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on the latter, I'm unsure when it rolled out). If we go further back in history how did Victorian people get around without a motor car? Mobile number is a standard field on job application forms and in many industries having one is essential and without one you'd be given a company one to use or not hired. My point is that standards change throughout generations, this generation does it's business online and, to a fair degree, on social networks (take the LM twitter feed for example)

Am I the only one who thinks that most of this modern "technology" is actually nothing more than a waste of time (and money)? Or, at the very least, am I the only one aged under ~30 to feel this way?

That depends what you define as modern technology. Smart phones are a time saver since you can check email on the go. Of course it's not healthy but then that wasn't the question ;)

What I am trying to get at is that social networks, as long as you take care, can enrich our lives - they are not inherently evil and many of you have implied

They helped prevent all of that nonsense from escalating? I was under the impression that they were part of how the riots were organised!

That was Blackberry Messenger which is more of an IM service than a social network
