On friday, I boarded a XC 170 at Derby, thinking it was 170115, went to the front coach and noticed it was 50111. So at Burton I checked and discovered it was 50111+79115 paired up as a hybrid unit.

Makes me wonder if the 2 units have had a dissagreement somewhere and XC have made a good unit from the 2 un-affected coaches and maybe it also explains why 220's have been making appearances on Nottingham-New St/Cardiffs.

I'm disappointed.

Thought for a moment that XC had secretly arranged for a 170 to be rebuilt as a hybrid vehicle. A bit like the Alexander hybridrive buses that Stagecoach use here in Oxford.

I'm still wondering why XCs 170s are doing so badly..?

Hopefully Tyseley had some time to sort them out this weekend since less than usual were needed in service..?

Shunting incident at TYS a few weeks ago. Apparently a xc driver thought he had more room than actually did whilst shunting!

A big issue with the 170s is not the 170s themselves but lack of traincrew. Cambridge depot is several senior cons short, birmiungham also has several sick so they are utilizing birmingham crew on the cambridge jobs, then using the spare voyager on local services (NOT - CDF/BHM - LEI) with birmimngham and bristol TM's

But LM aren't doing as bad are they? Or do LM class a return trip to Hereford as a diagram and have it sit there for the rest of the day..?

I think the theory goes that LM are doing well because Tyseley (an LM depot) spend most of their time working on LM stock, rather than XC stock.

Surely they've got to do it fairly if XC are paying for this?

They'll be contracted to provide a certain service level, which will presumably be applied to both fleets. Now if you were an LM manager with spare, above minimum, maintenance time available which units would get more attention?

You'd think, but nope. Tyseley is a law unto itself. Non London Midland units are at the back of the queue to get onto the pit every single night. It was the case when Central Trains were there, it will probably still be the case when the next franchise takes over the Snow Hill lines in Birmingham.
