I have got my £1 fare (plus 50p booking fee) to go from Salisbury to Waterloo :) Dep 19.26 arrive 2100 Im going on the Sleeper from Euston Station at around 23.50 so have plenty of time.

Whats the best way to get there, I think its around 2.2 miles away so maybe walking is out and I will have 2 smallish bags. Don't really know london or what an Oyster card is really.

Hop onto the Northern Line (northbound) at Waterloo. This takes you directly to Euston (five stops between the two stations).

An Oyster card costs £5 (refundable deposit) and the fare would be £1.90 (single). Alternatively a paper ticket costs £4 (single).

Cheers the £1.90 came up on NRE if I was going from Basingstoke. Is the Northern line underground?

Yes, it is a deep level tube line. Not sure where NRE got the £1.90 from

It looked right Brucey, but I had to get the £22.10 single as well, im guessing its an add on. It also mentioned travel cards but will leave that for another day to look in to.

Aside from the walk, you could use the tube (Northern Line Northbound direct to Euston) however that will cost you at least 3 times what you have paid to get from Salisbury to Waterloo!

Buses routes 59, 68 & 168 run from Waterloo to Euston. 59 & 68 terminate at Euston, 168 goes past it. Fare £2.20.

Oyster Card is hardly worth getting (unless of course your coming to London on regular basis) they cost £5.00 for the card then you have to top up on top minimum payment of £5.00. Sop that will be at least £10.00 initial start up.

I hope this helps.

If going by bus don't forget to buy your ticket from the machine (at bus stop) at Waterloo first as I don' think they will sell you one on-board from there.

Thanks for all the info and the speed of it, outstanding! Im only paying £19 BB on the sleeper so I like to keep costs down, thats half the fun for me. I have 3 nites in Glasgow for £30 in a Travelbodge :) actually I love them to be honest.

I would walk but it will be dark, somebody said the route is quite nice in daylight.

I believe the £5 minimum top-up only applies online.

A ticket office can issue an Oyster card with no credit for £5, as can Oyster vending machines. A TVM can then add any amount of credit to the card (minimum £5 at a window).

Particularly if it is for a Sunday night then you should check the tfl website for closed lines before planning it.
That part of the Northern line is closed today.

You can 'buy' the Oyster and return it for a refund at Euston, but there may be a horrendous queue.

I may need to be corrected, but I don't think a ticket office will issue an Oyster card for just £5. Either you put on some PAYG credit or a weekly or longer Travelcard (or both).

Actually, you may be right. I bought mine from a London Travel Information Centre (so not technically a ticket office), who said I could load lower amounts using a TVM (and just sold it for a fiver).

There's no reason why they shouldn't sell you just the card. You can't enter a station without the minimum fare from that station at that time. Also, NR stations (certainly Southeastern ones) will sell you a card but they can't add top up or register it over the counter; you have to go to the TVM for that.

I often find the easiest way to buy tickets from SWT Land to Euston is to buy a ticket to South Hampstead (the first stop from Euston), which covers the Underground too.

E.g Salisbury to South Hampstead will cover the Northern line transfer between Waterloo and Euston and save you faffing around with Oyster cards and Tube tickets etc.

If you are ever going to visit London (or pass through London) again, I would get the Oyster card. Once set up you can not have to worry about queuing or getting the right ticket again, and it will save you money long-term. The £5 deposit is refundable if you change your mind.

This is sound advice with normal tickets, however the OP is not using an ordinary NR ticket, but Megatrain, which makes the point rather moot.

This would also be what I recommend for people buying NR tickets.

Is there a fare clapham jct-euston rail only (ie via olympia)? I say this assuming that his SWT express sets down at Clapham and noting that apex tickets technically can't be ended long (but as long has he buys his clapham-euston ticket before commencing his SWT journey.....)

Other option depending if one bag is a rucksack is TfL barclays cycle hire - just under 30 mins for an unfit fat bloke (me) to do this KX to wat - total cost £1 on a credit/debit card at the on-street machines.

I really wouldn't risk this, in any case the ticket would be to London Terminals still leaving the OP to get from Charing Cross or to Zone U12* Londn.

I have a barclaycard Im sure they might have a tie in with Oyster. I will look at the bike although it will be dark.

That may well be the case on an ordinary fare but for a Megatrain ticket they are just point to point.

A lot of the vending machines at Tube Stations now will also sell you an oystercard. You will need to put a £5 top up on as well as the £5 deposit but as others have said you can hand this in at Euston and get your £5 deposit back plus the unused fare £3.10 tube or £3.70 bus.

No such fare. It'll be printed as Clapham Junction to London Terminals and valid only to Vauxhall/Waterloo/Charing Cross/London Bridge/City Thameslink/Blackfriars.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but as you guys know things concerning rail tickets inside out, can you use the Oyster card on a landline train, underground train and a bus? Im guessing the push bike is not paid by Oyster? And is Oyster only valid in London & surrounding areas?

Sorry if this is slighty going of thread, I didnt want to start another thread.

Yes, you can use Oyster on all trains*, London buses and underground within the London Fares area.

* = Can be used on any service shown in this map, however there are some exceptions, e.g. Heathrow Express and High Speed 1.

Boris Bikes are paid by credit or debit card at the terminal, or with a key fob that is connected to a prepaid account.

Plus the Croydon Tramlink but not Heathrow Connect between Hayes and Harlington and Heathrow.
