I can't get PRIV rate tickets, but I was just curious about something. If someone has got a 'TOC Privilege Card', can they buy PRIV rate First Class Anytime tickets?

Having read the ATOC site, it says they can get the reduced rate fares on Anytime tickets and doesn't specify Class, but I thought I'd read before that most staff aren't entitled to buy First Class PRIV tickets? :|

I'd appreciate it if someone could clear this up for me. :)

Only if they get First Class travel facilities, the class being indicated on the card itself.

Cheers,

Yes it kinda sucks, I mean if staff were to be able to purchase 1st Class PRIV tickets regardless of the class of facilities they held, then that would result in TOC's getting more revenue as some people would prefer to pay for the upgrade of class! Instead, the current PRIV discounts seem to sway staff more in the direction of just buying publicly available Advance tickets, which can often be cheaper than the PRIV ticket!

Thanks for the clarification chaps. It does seem like a bit of a shame. The more you read the T&C's, the less attractive access to PRIV rates actually appears.

How hard is it for your average driver or conductor to get an upgrade to the First Class facilities? Or is it just reserved for managers?

Typically for managers only, although how high those managers have to be may be dependant on TOC.

The folk who deal with all the s**t everyday can't get first class priv tickets.

Wonder what TfL will get me...

Proberbly nowt knowing my luck, but hey at least the're paying me enough to live in London, oh... wait. No.

Acually, silly question and very off topic, where could I live to work in C London for C22-25k? (That isn't a box)

No priv at all for TfL people, except bus/tube is free (forget what the national rail bit is now - it used to be the original sections of network that took oyster).

Where to live - you'll be looking at zones 5/6 I'd say - Havering is/used to be the cheapest, some areas at the top of north will be affordable.

If you're from uuuup north and will be travelling back there frequently, then I would recommend living in north london.

There are however safeguarded TfL and LUL staff who are still entitled to Priv.

Non-safeguarded TfL and LUL staff are also entitled to Priv rate annual seasons on East Coast and FCC (not taxed) and 75% off annual seasons on all other Tocs (taxable). The staff Oyster card is valid on LUL/Lorol/Tram/Bus/DLR, plus Stratford - Liv St, Upminster - Fen St, Kentish Town - London Bridge/Elephant, Amersham - Marylebone and Watford Jn - Euston.

As to where you live; on that salary you'd either be looking at a studio or 1 bed flat. Reasonable areas for that price could be anywhere out East, or South East such as Canada Water and the Royal Docks. Else, you could live pretty much anywhere if you shared.

Just a thought, but if you are going to be tubing in from zone6, could it be easier to get a flat in a town on a mainline? It could be cheaer to get a flat + season than a flat in London. (and you could get faster trains, that might actually get you ther quicker

Oh, did I mention I wont' be living in a studio flat...! I won't fit...

And technically I would be working for LUL Engineering, so it might be PRIV rates, as they did mention that when I spoke to them, as (75% of NR Fares)

Was thinking either docklands or at the northern end of a tube or fcc line, but i don't know where in lul i'd be working location wise, or the working hours
(or if i have a job offer yet)

If you know about split ticketing it can work out cheaper to buy Priv discounted tickets. I do this on an intercity TOC that shall remain nameless, although I have to put up with the odd threat of having the Priv withdrawn/being reported as splitting is supposedly akin to intentional fare evasion.

Hopefully you (and everyone else who reads this) knows that's nonsense! I've never come across that threat before. In fact, I aksed for an Eccles-Liverpool ticket at a ticket office which shall remain nameless few weeks ago, and was practically told to split at Newton-le-Willows by a very helpful clerk. It only saved me 30p or so.

The guard maintained that he was right and that his 20 years in revenue protection against my one year meant that his understanding was far superior. He stressed that he was “letting me off” as I had clearly made a mistake, but if he saw me again doing the same thing, he'd report me for fare evasion, which would affect my employment.

I have problems with guards on that line more often than not, it gets worse when they check with colleagues who also don't have a clue where it comes to Condition 19.
