Does anyone know what the third platform under construction in Staines station is for? Will Staines become a terminal station for any route?

I'm not aware of any new platform being built at Staines, are you sure it isn't just the Up platform being lengthened?

Could be. But it also looks like new tracks are being built the other side of the platform.

That's what I thought, a lot of the platforms in that area are being lengthened to take 10 car trains - could this work be just a part of it?

I was asked to look at this earlier this year by one of the major Infrastructure Contractors.

It is all to do with the Wessex platform lengthening scheme wich covers a whole host of stations including Vauxhall, Guildford, Epsom, Twickenham, and a variety of others that I cannot remember now.

Certainly there will be some considerable works at Guildford.

Yes, I just found that it's for the 10 cars operation for the Widsor route. The airtrack project would build a new station at Staines called Staines high street. However this planned had been abandoned.

There are some tracks remaining from the old bay platform/sidings/whatever it was where the car park on the north side of the track is, could this bee what you saw?

You can see it here, partially obscured by vegetation as a continuation of the third track.

The final version of the Airtrack plan had already scrubbed the Staines High St new station (due to local objections) which would have been at the west of the new triangular junction, but it still included a third platfom at Staines station itself, for terminating Heathrow Express trains, which would have run through T5 and reversed at Staines. That part of the plan (as far as it affected Staines) included a west facing bay platform behind the current up platform, but no through road.

This week's Weekly Operating Notice states that the bay platform at Staines has actually been shortened by 58 yards.

Has the new footbridge and lifts got in the way, and this is just tidying up the loose ends?
