Had a very strange encounter with the old bill today....
We'd been to Eastleigh with the works van and were driving back to Fareham. I'd just come to the end of the flyover that takes you over the A27 roundabout when a check of the mirrors revealed a silver police car rushing up on my off side.
I slowed down and pulled to the left to create a path for him to come through, as i checked my mirrors again, i saw more flashing lights approaching.
The car pulled up alongside me and an arm cover by a black jacket with the hand in a leather glove, came out of the window. The arm had a fluroscent yellow sleve, similar to the police high vis.
This arm signalled me over to the left, and in case i didn't get the message, the car forced me over aswell. The car then stopped in the middle of a dual carriageway and the arm signal changed to stop.
Several more metropolitan police vehicles then shot down the right hand side of me and onto the roundabout head, blocking traffic coming round.
The next vehicle in the convoy was an unmarked farmer style land rover, 06 reg and blacked out windows. This went racing down towards the roundabout well in excess of the speed limit and turned down towards Gosport.
The road was blocked for a few more seconds to allow a buffer zone behind the vehicle, then the rest of the police cars rushed off after it again
I'd bet money on that being the SAS or SBS in the landrover

If I were you I'd complain about the danger to your life, and demand a very good reason. Not to mention reimbursement for the extra fuel tax you paid as a result of slowing and speeding up.

Thank God the railway is regulated in such a way that trains can't force other trains.

You'll find that a policeman wearing gloves in the summer is doing so because he is fully prepared to draw his SA80

OMG Nick... You on the white powder again?...

Nope. I just feel that people who deliberately put someone's life in danger without valid reason should be locked up for safety.

Highway Code said:
You must then pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so. Then switch off your engine.
Law RTA 1988 sect 163
Since there is no hardshoulder, the next layby, parking, service station or slip road should be taken.

I feel that people who talk **** should be banned from forums. Shame it hardly ever happens though.

If it was the SAS or SBS in the land rover, they more than likely had a good reason indirectly, failing that, they had a bloody big gun that carries alot of persuasion :glasses5:

More likely to be SO19 escorting a Category A prisoner to the Island. The unmarked Land Rover was a Defender 110. Normal transfers are done via the commercial ferry service from Portsmouth. More exotic fare go 'other routes'.

Somebody else said that Bighat, but i'd of thought they'd of used a police van, as i've seen these in convoy on the M25 before?
Also, i never knew they kept such people at Haslar?

The SAS would have been in the police cars, whoever was in the land rover was the VVVVVVVIP or a CA foreign prisoner. There wasn't any major incidents around gostport yesterday, the worst i know of (been on HMS Sultan at the time) was a police car smashing into the rear of a mini outside

and that major risk to life is a load of rubbish, they had blue lights on, and they wouldn't have FORCED slash over, just been VERY perswaysive (new word, getin).

They wouldn't have been carring SA80's neitheer, MP5's are the preffered weapon because they are multishot, light, and relativly small for the amount of punch they have. Only the army is issued with SA80's for that reason

The SAS are the only escrting agency who use that sort of land rover. There is no point using an unmarked car really because with the amount of police cars around it, it would have been obvious which vechle contained whoever wasbeen escorted

The Met use those armoured vans on the news a few weeks ago used to transport the prioners from the attempted blow up of airliners

Handled one of these. Surprisingly light and easy. Surely really really dangerous criminals would be escorted by army or in one of those honking big lorries rather than a Land Rover.

Chaps, there's a good debate going on here but could we not attack any members in particular? Received a couple of member comments on this issue. Cheers, TB.

Cheers for the info.
ChrisM obviously knows the landrovers i mean.
I thought maybe the SBS because the route they took would of been handy for getting to Portsmouth Navy base via a quick speed boat trip across the harbour, i presumed who ever was in it, was probably enroute to the middle East and we'll probably read about it in the papers in a few days time. :headbang:
BTW i'm not saying anybody is wrong or anything, i was saying to 50149 I expected him or Nutter to jump and correct me on the weapons ;)

Well, you know, we both have done Public services courses aimed at the army, and i have read a few to many SAS books, so I know what they use. I'm glad i didn't dissapoint you steve ;)

Just for info:
The UKSF (SAS, SBS, MI5 etc) only use SA80's when they want it to look like the regular army, but for escorting duties, they normally have an MP5 as a primary weapon, and a 9mm pistol as a secondry

Pull over at the nearest safe place such as a layby, in accordance with the law.

Ok then Nick, when you urgently require the attention of the emergency services, just remember that you may have to wait a while longer than you would like, whilst they wait for all the other road users to reach a safe place such as a layby before pulling over to let them past. ;)

You do talk some crap...

To be honest, when a police car with flashing lights goes down a dual carrigeway, cars slow to about 60mph and bunch up, making it hard for cars to pull into L1 to let the police car pass in L2. In addition, many emergency service vehicles don't speed unless it's a chance, since ti's better for the emergency service vehicle to go slower but get there in one piece.

Should those vehicle owners also recieve compensation for the additional fuel costs and tire wear incurred whilst slowing down and changing lanes? ;)

Sorry misread first time.

Nope, they should continue at the same speed they were going because
the faster the traffic is moving, the bigger the gaps between cars, which makes it safer for cars to change lanes.

The point is, car drivers fear the penalties for speeding so much that they are making the road more dangerous.
