Oh dear, yet another level crossing crash :(

BBC News have it on their breaking news ticker, and are reporting one fatality, with more details soon.

EDIT: From BBC News:

One dies as Virgin train hits car

A person has died in an accident involving a Virgin train and a car in Yorkshire.
No-one on the train - the 1425 from Plymouth to Edinburgh - was hurt in the derailment at about 2100 on Monday, North Yorkshire Police said.

Firefighters and police are still at the scene at Copmanthorpe near York and rail services in the area are at a standstill.

An inquiry is under way but the incident was not at a level crossing.

So where was the incident if it wasn't at a level crossing?

The train would be braking for York station just beyond Colton so we should probably be thankful that the station is positioned where it is!

Earfit Lane is nearer Copmanthorpe. It's a private crossing - I've never seen anything use it. There are lights to show when a train is coming, and instructions to phone signaller if slow vehicle - presume farm traffic only.

If it's not a LC, it could be one of numerous road bridges - there are several in the Colton area.

The train would not be braking for York. As the train was ex-Leeds, it is likely that the train was on the Down Leeds line doing 100mph.

I'm 99.99% certain there is no levels crossings there, so I assume it's another pig-ignorant and selfish person commiting suicide.

Having checked Multimap, there is a level crossing where this seems to have occurred. See here. Location is the LC just south of Copmanthorpe.

'Look North' (local tv news) has just reported that pax are being helped off the train by emergency services.

Looking on the Multimap link theblackwatch left, looks like the road just goes over the line, then is a dead end (pardon the pun), so why would someone drive along there? Can either be suicide, joyriders dumping car, or accident.

So yes - if it was at that crossing, it may have been suicide, as I can't imagine why a car would use that crossing.

^^^^ We shall have to see what the news/enquiry tells us, I guess...

So when the BBC meant it didn't happen at a level crossing, they mean it didn't happen at a full barrier on a main road?

If they are saying it is near Earfit Lane, but not actually at Earfit Lane, then it is theoretically possible that a car crashed through the barriers at what used to be a crossing just north of that location (you can see it clearly on the map). That is also a photo spot, so there must be photos online of the location in question.

Mirroring Great Heck a car has left the road and crashed through a fence and onto the track. According to BBC News 22.45

OK, maybe not.. how about this one ;)
That's the area, but try this for better detail:

http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=53.905583~-1.147546&style=h&lvl=16

The Voyager was booked on the Dn Leeds, that is the track furthest West.

The info we are given - that it is near Earfit Lane but not actually at a LC, suggests it may have occured where Moor Lane bends from heading north to heading northeast, if a car crashed through the barriers. But for that to happen the car would have had to cross 3 tracks to reach the path of the Voyager.

Does it not depend from which side the car came?

What about the 'Moor Lane' to the north of the line. It looks from locallive to only be a fence at the end of that road before the railway, and elevation as well for it to get over the slow line.

They're now saying on ITN the ECML is closed!?

Well if a train has just crashed, of course it will be shut! It is a very good ares for phots, and the crossing in question, is or at least was, very good for knowing when trains are coming, as there is a green light when it's clear, and a red warning light that shows when a train is approaching. There is a sign on the crossing stating that you will be trespassing if you cross, as it is private. I cant imagine a car "skidded off" into the line, as the road is a fair way from the crossing at that point.
