Today I went into town with Dad to get a few bits for Mum's birthday tomorrow and found a good book in a cheap shop for myself for £4.99 (£15.99 on the back cover) entitled 'Coming up with the goods' (ISBN 0-907864-81-3).

What the book is is a collection of stories, superb photographs and information about various turns on a number of freight routes operated by EWS, told by someone who joined the company for a few cabrides for this book to be made. Some of them are quite humourous and interesting. Some of the drivers featured are enthusiasts themselves. The last story is particuarly interesting as they suffer a fuel leak on the ECML.

The routes and trains featured are:

  • Teesport to Workington - Chemicals - 37261 'Caithness'
  • Bristol to Penzance - Mail - 47727 'Duke of Edinburgh Award'
  • Peak Forest to Scunthorpe - Binliner - 60062 'Samuel Johnson'
  • Westbury to Purfleet - Stone - 59004 'Paul A. Hammond'
  • Eastleigh to Hoo - 2-Wagon Ballast - 73136 'Kent Youth Orchestra' & 73108
  • Hoo to Grain - Empty Boxes - 37516
  • Ayr to Fife - Coal - 56078 and later 56088
  • Port Talbot to Shotton - Steel - 60071 'Dorothy Garrod'
  • Glasgow to Inverness - Supermarket - 66060
  • Crewe to Carlisle - Steam Excursion - 35005 'Canadian Pacific'
  • King's Lynn to Doncaster - Sand - 58044 'Oxcroft Opencast'
  • Birmingham (Longbridge) to Folkestone - Cars - 66108
  • Immingham to Jarrow - Petroleum - 60048 'Eastern'

That's typical of you. Go into town to buy something for someone and end up buying yourself something.

By the way, I didn't realise you'd taken up speed reading. You've only had the book for a couple of hours!

It's a very interesting book - particularly like the Kings Lynn to Doncaster bit, but I am biased!

Not a problem anymore - he seems to have finally got fed up with certain people judging by the "going.....going.....gone!" under his name and "bye all" in his signature!
